 Boat Trailer upgrades
Decided to update the trailer. 2009 McClain Trailer. Originally the trailer had 2x4 carpeted bunks. I have been looking at everyone's ideas on the bunks. Tore off the old carpet that was practically falling off and discovered the boards were warped and some where rotted on the bottom.
After seeing what the weight of the boat did to the 2x4's I decided I needed heavier lumber. Went to Menards and got treated 2x6's. while I was walking around I saw they had some composite decking in 1x6's but it was 50 plus dollars a board. If was going to spend that I would buy the poly bunks off the interweb. They also carried a composite cap/deck covering that came in 1x4's that had groves on the bottom. I bought the new lumber, composite decking, stainless steel screws and carriage bolts for 150.00.
Installed the 2x6's and then took the composite boards and laid them upside down so the grooves would face up. Drilled and countersunk the holes for the screws to fit down into. I really did not have to countersink the screws due to the grooves but wanted to get the screws a little further down into the boards.
They are not to slick but I can push the boat around alittle without them being wet. If anyone does go this route the other side is really slick, but you will have to really countersink the screws down.
repacked the wheel bearings, installed new LED trailer light and 2 wheel jack stand 100.00
total cost was about 250.00 dollars for several more years of use out of this trailer

Yeah, man, worth it! I could not find cypress boards, so bought trailer co. boards with carpeting but put the slick pads over them. Now I only need to get the tip of the trailer ends in the water and the boat slides right in, so I figure the bunks ought to hold up longer.

 Re: Boat Trailer upgrades
I really wanted to do the thicker composite boards but at 50.00+ a board I could not justify 200+ in just the composite boards. So the cover cap boards worked fine. I hope the thinner boards will hold up. I really don't see them really wearing out. But time will tell. I also saw Menards carries a 4x8 sheet of black poly sheeting but its only like 1/8" thick

 Re: Boat Trailer upgrades
I will have to paint the boards once the boards dry out. Them being treated they were soaking wet when I drilled and screwed them on the trailer. I figure this next spring I will take the boat off and seal the wood with deck sealer.
I tried the trailer this past weekend. The bunks are crazy slick. some of the areas I drop in are at Conservation Areas and their boat ramps are graveled dikes. The boat slide off the trailer with out any problem. But trying to load the boat by myself the bunks are to slick. So I have to hook the boat winch up and winch it up by hand.
