I need some advice boat builders help a fellow mmt member out. I been on here for years. Im not trying to make a living at it just enjoy doing these types of things and would like to get a boat cheaper than i can get one built. I have access to a miller 251 with 30a spool gun and weld pretty decent on aluminum. I just need a few tips on getting the front/rake right i can figure out the rest. Give me a PM help is greatly appreciated

Call uncle j. He can probably set you up with a "kit" that has the sides cut already.

They are a pretty penny to not knocking him the man has to make money. Im not going to say a price but i can save about 800 to 1000$ doing it myself versus a kit.

Hey if it comes down to it i may have to i have a skiff to go off of . Im pretty sure i can doit but pointers would be nice. Just on figuring how to draw the rake out on the sides i know most builders have templates but they had to start somewhere making it. Theres a guy in pierre part that im sure would give me some pointers i havent talked to him in awhile i will have to stop by next time i go out that way which wont be long. Its about time to start gettin traps ready (making sure their still there) lol make sure nobody took them after the season was over and put new string on some.

How much rake do you want in the boat? I usally build mine between 8"-10", but that's just a personal preference. I start with that, and block the bottom up to the amount of rake you want. I then use a heavy piece of flat bar, 1/2" x 4" but 1/4" will work, and set it as a bow stem. I simply set it at an angle that looks appealing to the eye. Once on place, you will basically just pull the sides around, and scribe them to the bow stem. The only cut will be the angle on the end of the sheet, there is no cut between the chine and the shear line, that remains constant from the transom to the tip of the bow on a skiff.

Attached a couple of pictures of one I did a few years back that might help it make sense, as well as a link to a build I did on here a few years back.

Also i will be doing the same around 8 to 10in of rake but i see where you keep the sides the same all the way down and use that bar to keep the sides from folding in as you curve/pull the front in.

Another question what do you use to cut your pipe in half for the sides? Also about how long of rake do you use i would prefer a little shorter than what you did but the same height.

That would be the way to go unless theres a good way to split it im sure the half pipe cost more than the whole piece lol but hey it might not be much more ill have to check it out might be worth getting that over the bs of cutting whole pipe

They sell half pipe as an extrusion. If you've done a good amount of fitting, there's a pretty simple old timers way to draw two straight lines down a 20' length of pipe, then you can rip it yourself. It will certainly be cheaper, but I guess that all depends on what your time's worth. You can pretty much use just about any shape extrusion made for your gunwales, I just like 1/2 pipe, no sharp edges to catch lines or nets, and I like the look.

I generally start the rake anywhere from 6' to 7' from the bow on all my boats.

I will more then likely buy the halfpipe save time on splitting it. What would you use if i did split it skill saw jig saw? Also what angle for sides? I will more then likely do 1 piece hull so i dont have to buy a sheet of 1/8 and 3/16.
