Post subject:  water wings or spray rail on go devil hull

i just got my first mud hull, a 1644 go devil. it is the older round chine hull. i have my 35 gdsd on it and tested it today and did fairly well. only complaint i have is the water come up to the top of the gunnel on plane due to the thrust of the motor. ive seen a few pictures of hulls with a rail welded down the side but would like to see more detailed pics of this or something similar if anyone has them. also read that wedges may help. open to any thoughts or suggestions. just looking to see pictures of what others have found to work. thanks

That boat is borderline big enough. Any chance you have waterlogged foam weighing it down? Saving Flint the trouble.. what does the bottom look like?

Ive checked the foam. Had a little bit wet in the front but I cut that out and the rest is dry. The floor foam was previously removed. The bottom is in fair shape. One dent towards the back and a slight wave but nothing else significant

I had an 1844 that did the same and the foam was out of it. Wall of green water above the rail... always hated looking at that.

Yea I've read about small 1/2 inch wedges on the bottom helping to give it more lift and was thing that in combination with a spray rail may help

Some will certainly disagree, but IMO that is just not enough boat for that motor.

That boat is for a long tail.

You have a combination of short and narrow. Then add the round chine. Not good for a SD.

I would spend very little time and money chasing it, and focus on saving the money to upgrade the boat.

That is a good boat and I would imagine you could get some decent money for it, put a little with that and then get you a better boat for your motor. You need longer and wider, but at least one of those.....

I understand he above, but for my purposes a wider or longer boat would make it very difficult to use. We launch anywhere from open ramps to Tiny roadside ditches. I really like the size and it works as it is for me just thought if a small adjustment would help improve then it may be worth it

I'd be willing to bet an 1844 will go 99% of where that 1644 will and perform all around much better with a SD

The Ditches I run my 14ft was tight. The 16 is about all one person can run solo. We had a 18 through them but some one has to stand up front and push the bow around. So yea an 18 would be doable but I'd rather make the shorter hull work

I used epoxy and put on some wedges to see what happens. Worst case I'll pull them off

he did say it has a hook on the bottom in the back , so that will kill your performance!

Post subject:  Re: water wings or spray rail on go devil hull

i put them on yesterday using jb weld to see if they would work. made two wedges 4 inches each. left the one side two inches and cut the other to about a third of an inch. tested it today solo and the back jumped right up and i had about 8-9 inches of freeboard where before i had water almost right to the gunnel. only had deep water to test in. did lose 1-2mph. i think i need to shave them down a little because the bow was almost plowing and i think thats part of the speed loss. but for what its worth i think they should help and make this combo work well

are you gonna adjust the size of them anymore? Or maybe have something permanently welded on once you figure out what works best?

Post subject:  Re: water wings or spray rail on go devil hull

im going to grind them down a little and see if it will bring the bow back up a little. i ran it for a while today solo and it did great im just worried if i get a load in it the front will plow too much. but as long as i find the sweet spot i may have them welded on im not sure. the jb weld holding them on didnt break today and we ran a fair amount of mud and hit a few stumps/logs. solo today it ran 28 with just me and a small cooler. was running right with my buddies excel and modded mud buddy
