Post subject:  The Time Has Come- custom build.

I am now completely retired from the Army, no more year long deployments and no more having to move every couple years. I am having a custom mud hull built exactly the way I want it.

Having read the threads on MMT for years, I have been highly impressed at the comments and praise Uncle J gets on his builds. I reached out to him, and he not only was ready to do a build, he offered me a military discount that he claimed I would not be able to turn down. He was right, and now we are on our way.

It is going to be an 18x54 Pointed Bow Bateau with 22 inch sides, 5 foot deck with 3/16 gauge hull. It will have removable bow fishing rails, two rod boxes, and will have custom paint and hydro turf installed.

I spoke with Russ (here on MMT), and he gave me metric crap tons of good advice. It was actually cool to find out that Russ and I have chewed some of the same dirt in the military and have done some of the same shooting competitions.

The boat is going to be multi purpose, and will do as much fishing, bow fishing, trapping, and possible coon hunting as it will waterfowl hunting.

I debated myself long and hard on what motor. One day I was sure it would be a 37 EFI Gator Tail, then the next day I was back to looking at the Pro Drive, and considering the Mud Buddy. Russ dropped some very good advice on me. He told me to wait on the mud motor, and just start out with a four stroke outboard. I thought on it, and I think he gave very sound advice.

Right now I am living in NW Arkansas. There is no mud were I am at. Would have to run over to Oklahoma to get into any, or hit mud when we routinely travel back home to Alabama. I am close to Beaver Lake, and it is all hard gravel and sand. Starting out with an outboard makes much sense. When my youngest daughter graduates high school, we will most likely move back to the deep south.

I am about 95% sure that I am going to get a brand new Tohatsu 50 HP four stoke. I believe it will serve me well, and I also believe I will still have much use for it when I do decide on a mud motor.

The good thing about waiting on the Mud Motor is that there seems to be much technology leaps and bounds every few years. Who knows what radical new change will hit the mud motor builds in the next few years. I may also keep my eye open for good used mud motors in the event that I am heading some where that I would be using it.

I am stoked about getting the boat built and getting out on the water. My wife is as excited, and likes to fish as much or more than I do.

Now I need to start looking for a young Labrador to train.

Congrats Ranger! Thank you for your many years of service to our great country[THUMBS UP SIGN] I hope you get to spend the rest of your years up in Mallard country. I met Mudslinger at Mighty White Marine in Augusta AR when I bought his used GTR last week.

They are a dealer for gtr, tahatsu, Yamaha and more. It was a really nice place and their service was top notch. Shandon is the owner and couldn't have been more helpful. You may want to check them out for your motor. Enjoy that new ride.

I would love to do the Caddo run. My new work schedule and time to build the new boat get a vote.

No boat isn't a problem. I've made the last 2 runs without one. Someone will let y'all hitch a ride. No one believes I even have a boat as they haven't ever seen it. Lol

It would be nice to actually meet folks face to face that I have conversed with for years.

You all get my buddy Dean Guidry to show up, and I will be sure to show.

Good deal. Post up some pictures as the build progresses. How far out is he for delivery these days?

I am trying not to ask him on progress. I figured every minute taking pics or texting me is time not welding.

I am curious to see it come along. I will post pics when they come.

Good to hear you are retired you might won't to think about a 70hp and a jackplate shallow water and carrying a heavy load you won't regret it.

Should be days away from Uncle J starting on my boat.

Went to Academy today and got trolling motor, battery, anchor and line, horn, fire extinguisher, life vests, a Magellan 50 qt cooler, and a few other things.

Now I just need to make the final decision on my motor.

I am ready to put all this stuff to use. Still need to get my bow fishing lights.

Most definitely let me know how that Magellan cooler works out. Shouldn't be long now!!!

Post subject:  Re: The Time Has Come- custom build.

I did some research and the original Magellan coolers had some issues with the lids warping. It is my understanding that they fixed the problem.

Heck with all the money I am sinking into the boat and motor, I should have just splurged and got the Yetti.

Post subject:  Re: The Time Has Come- custom build.

I wouldn't spend the money on a yeti. You can get the rtic's cheap still until they're completely shut down. You can also pick up the blemished orca's and k2's cheap. Igloo also has a sportsmans model thats rotomolded. I've used all those with good luck.

Congrats and thank you for your service. I hear uncle J makes a great Rig. I myself just picked up my first boat. I had Chad at Prodigy build mine and went with the mud buddy. I bounced all around on the motor as well and landed on the mud buddy. They are definitely different to drive. I had mine on the lake in a chop w me and 3 adults and a child w a cooler and did 28 mph. Many congrats again. Hey. I'm a old coon hunter myself and sure did love listening to those hounds. Keep us updated w pics

That looks sharp enough to cut yourself on. Congrats brother!

I'd look into some of the hardwood and bottomland type patterns for where you're at. Do something different ;)

Post subject:  Re: The Time Has Come- custom build.

I want military multicam pattern with a green 3/75 Ranger scroll on the side. Somehow I am doubting that will be a viable option.

Post subject:  Re: The Time Has Come- custom build.

If they can paint a car this color, I am betting it can go on a boat.

Post subject:  Re: The Time Has Come- custom build.

I dig the paint scheme. I bet you could have vinyl decals made for the ranger scroll. Probly even something a little tougher for the abuse a duck boat takes.

They sell stencil kits for the multicam. I just googled it

The only multicam stencils I can find are the smaller pattern more for firearms. I have not seen any of the bigger ones for vehicles and such.

Post subject:  Re: The Time Has Come- custom build.

Depending on how hardcore you want to get, you could probably transfer an image of multicam to Mylar sheets with a exacto knife and an hour or two, thus making your own stencil.

Uncle J contacted me today and said that his painter dude was able to replicate the pictures of the multicam I sent him.

We may never catch a fish or kill a duck, but we are about to take sexy to a whole new level out in the backwaters.

I am stoked about seeing this thing when it is done. It seems like time has gone in reverse these last two weeks.
