Post Complete Lower Unit Overhaul
Okay well.... my Dixie shaft, is no longer a one piece shaft, it is now in 2 pieces. No need to bash, I made the costly mistake of purchasing this motor instead of a GTR. I wish I could afford a new GTR but I cant. So Im stuck with this until I hit the lotto big. With that said, this past duck season the motor has been jam up, with my 1651 Excel was able to run 30-33 solo, and about 29 loaded down. I have about every kink worked out of the frame so far and am decent at turning wrenches. One thing with this LU was I was never able to keep water out of the belt box. It would leak past my prop seal and I would have about a cup of water in it each ride. Heres my ideas:

-New shaft (what type of metal do I need to go with?) Strongest/most cost effective

-I purchased some sealed bearings. They are by VXB: R14-2RS. http://www.vxb.com/page/bearings/PROD/inch/Kit7485
What bearings is GT running? Or does anyone know of a different higher quality bearing for that size?

Inside the LU there is 2 bearing caps. One on the end right next to prop, with a spot machined for an oil seal to fit in. On the bearing cap going into housing there is no seal. So when you try and fill up the shaft tube with grease, after you run a little bit and grease breaks down it seeps it way into the belt box. I planned on having the bearing cap cut to fit another seal.
This is the seal

Is there a better seal I could use?

Any other ideas? Once I can keep the entire shaft tube filled with grease. I think the frame will be problem free.

Once I pull tail shaft, I can post more pics. I would appreciate if all the brains on here and I could figure this mistake of a purchase out.

Been bout my luck here lately. Had a bunch of crap tear up recently.... Not just mudmotors. Of course we get somewhat of a little push of birds and my motor breaks. Krazo on here was with me, hated to make him push pole and me paddle back to the ramp! lol

I know it isnt ideal but we've used standard cold rolled round stock... Its easy to machine what you need and can be purchased fairly cheap... for the seals we never really used anything special just a standard oil seal (we stacked 3 of em; innermost pointed in and outer two pointed out)... Marine goop to seal up the belt box where the cover and the shaft bolt up, this is the best way we have found to get a good gasket... Marine grease and you're good to go!

I'm gonna go talk to the machine shop next week. When I talked with mike he said it was a chromoly shaft. I know I can get one made by his father in law for 225 but gonna try a local place first. I'll definitely try the triple seal idea. I'll have to have the bearing caps cut to fit. Once I can get this lower unit to seal. I'll think I'll have a reliable motor
