After checking my lower unit oil I noticed it was quite milky, so I changed the oil. It was fine over the winter, probably because it was stored and not on the water. My question is this: Should I just wait for the lower seals to go completely, or should I change them out now anyway, just in case? If I change them, are there any tips or anything I should keep in mind? I was told to face the lips for the first two seals toward the prop and the lip for the 3rd seal facing the boat. He mentioned that the 3rd seal can ba a PITA to put in, any tips for putting these in would be welcome. There isn't any grease or anything I need to pack in with the seals, is there? When seals do go out while on the water, what affects do you see in the motor when you are driving? Thanks for any help. |

Just change them out when you have time. The seals are on $10 each. |

High temp grease. I use it to pack the seals so everything stays in place as you press them into the nut. Then antisieze the threads on the nut. Also make sure to use a piece of emery cloth to debur the shaft just in case you got a hanger. |

Seals are only $10 each, I don't have a part number handy. All you gotta do is knock out the old ones and press in the new and you are good to go! |

I have a 36hp prodrive I took my seal nut to the machine shop and had the back of the nut boarded and installed a seal and i been running it for a 150 hours with no leaks.before I had to change my oil and my seals about every 50hr due to water getting in it with the new seal moss and cutgrass doesnt get behind the nut and the wheel as bad as it did before i install the new seal in back of the nut. |

Im sure the seals can be had cheaper, BUT judging by looks of it the seal lip is narrow. if there would be a way to get a wider seal lip, it would cover a little more are on the shaft to stop water intrusion.. I havent seen a torn apart lower unit to see the machine work of the the seal polished area, to see if that would help.. I know if room is availabel you can double seal it aswell... Ive seen it don on tractor PTo shafts. |
