Can some one give me the steps to change a belt on a gator-tail gtr 35. I know you have to remove the lower shaft. Can you please post the steps.

There is a life time J, but if you are doin it yourself you remove the lower unit bolts and pull lower unit off, then you remove clutch housing (if you have GTR you'll probably have to remove the reverse caliper) then you pull belt out the top of the unit. Pretty easy and straight forward.

I did all of this but I can not get the belt back on the lower unit while I have the top of the belt on the clutch. Is there a trick or do you have to remove the clutch off the engine and then put the belt on the lower belt gear? I have the old one off but can not get this thing back together.

Not sure if this is the fast way but I would remove the lower unit output shaft lift it clean off the belt then remove the belt from the top. Replace the belt and put the lower unit back in.

You should be able to slide the lower unit back in by lifting then sliding it in. Hoyt said one person should do this as it has to go in just right. He removed the lower unit at SETX run for someone.

It has to be angled just right to get that bottom of the belt on. You may have to angle the prop towards the ground to get the belt on the lower gear and once it slides on you can push it in and put a couple of bolts in the flange part and spin the prop to make sure the belt works its way all the way on the lower gear. then with a flashlight shine down from the top and make sure belt is all the way on then you can proceed to put the rest of the bolts in the lower unit, when fully installed recheck belt and make sure its tight and all the way on the lower gear.

Get you a piece of string and put it around the belt on the bottom. Pull down on the string to stretch the belt downward while putting the lower unit in the belt. You initially have to tilt the outdrive point the lower gear up to get it started on the belt. Then with the sting you should be able to assist and get the belt positioned correctly. Then pull the string out. Its a one person job. Once you get everything lined up just right with the help of the string it will go together easily.

talked to a gator tail mechanic and he said it takes about an hour. you loosen all the motor mount bolts and remove the ones on the tiller side and tilt the motor back and prop it up after removing the housings and the belt slides right on and right off.
