Post subject:  prodrive skegs....

anybody ever cut down the skeg on a prodrive? I had problems getting up on plane to get out of a pond I was in while my buddy in a gtr did laps around me. Skeg kept picking up dead cane and grass and creating a 200 lb anchor on the skeg not allowing me on plane.......Water was shallow and when Id pick the motor up to clear the mass, it wouldnt go anywhere......... Id like to go in and start up at the top end of the skeg and cut it at a better angle....the skeg would prolly be about an inch or so from the lower units gear, then round off and basically finish to the prop as normal. Kp said I could cut the whole skeg off if I wanted but there wouldnt be anything to protect the prop if I were to hit something. I wasnt planning on taking the whole skeg off, though I thought about it several times when I was trenching and clearing a path in the pond to jump out of on to plane ( i needed the speed to get across 30' of dry land to get back into the bayou).

We were south of your flat, trying to make it over to the bee hives to see if we had enough water to park instead of having to launch at the 73 bridge every time.....there aint enough water. I hadnt heard too much shooting coming from the north part of shallow prong..... what days have you been hunting? We are gonna be out there again Wednesday morning. someone gonna be up in there to help keep the birds moving? There were birds all over your lease Sunday........Gadwalls and teal galore..... the airboats would spook em off blind lake and they would all go down just north of shallow prong bayou.

That looks good!! Is it a cut down prodrive skeg or did you fab it......looks like a custom job..... how do you like it? has it decreased the amount of trash that collects on it? I have never had this problem untill yesterday and it was the first time I ever cursed at my motor. I was ready to leave the boat in the marsh!!! I could not get on plane to save my life..... It took me an hour and a half to trench out and clear the debris from a "runway" to jump on plane and cross a dry hump..... If there was a water way out I could have just put it in reverse and powered my way out, reverse worked fine.

The only way to fix the problem is to cut the 6" knuckle off and replace with a GTR lower unit!! Remember admitting it is the first step to fixing it!!

It was custom. I never have any problems with vegetation and getting on step.

naw, I still wanna be able to get on plane in reverse, even if the skeg prevents me from doing it in forward!!!!!

Post subject:  Re: prodrive skegs....

It was probably just a little bit of operator error. You have to clear the motor of the vegetation real quick without losing your momentum.

Another reason to get at Gator-Tail. When I was researching surface drive motors a couple of years ago, I discovered a few discussion threads about this very issue and it was a factor in my deciding to go with a Gator-Tail. I think a major design flaw, if you want to call it that, with Pro-drives is the the short length of the drive shaft and its configuration restraints in order to accommodate the 180 degree spin of the lower unit. Its nice to have full power revers, but to get that there is a sacrifice with the stoutness of the lower unit. And that large skeg hangs up on stuff.

You can put the best mofo on the tiller and it will still happen everytime!!

Post subject:  Re: prodrive skegs....

The lower unit is pretty damn stout dguid.... and after looking at the design and the problem I was having, the angle of the drive shaft and the LARGE skeg seem to be the problem...... I havent had this problem before and can run veggies and grass no problem. This was dead grass and cane in soupy soft mud for about a foot and a half than a hard bottom with 1-5 inches of standing water. Im gonna have my buddy that works over at echo water jet me a new and improved low profile prodrive skeg, If it works then I got no problems, If it dont then Ill really think about a gtr.

I watched a gtr get stuck in hyacinth I just drove through. Just sayin
It was actually a short between the floor and tiller handle
The again opening weekend I got stuck and so did the gtr and gdsd thar came to get me. I made it further than they did on accident. Then a mud boat finally came and got me. Both times I told people don't go there and they did
Moral of the stories, when you are supposed to take a left don't take a right into a 400 yard pocket of mud and oysters and learn how to drive before you think you can take anything.

I've seen GTR's get hung up with vegetation catching on the belt housing where I just walked out of it no problem. 6 one way, half a dozen the other.

Eljefe, I don't have a pic of the skegs I'm making now just a few of the prototypes. I'll see what i can do for you tomorrow. Oh and i don't cut the stock one down i throw it in the corner of my shop! lol I make them from 1/4 inch plate . The most important thing it to get the longest rack possible. A longer rack also gives you a better angle. So instead of curving up so soon like the stock one let it ride almost to the transom before turning up! ;) theres like 3 to 4 inches of wasted realistate infront the stocker. if you look at all the other manufactures there skegs run staight all the way to the belt housing. and there belt housing nearly touches the transom when trimmed down. Thats for a reason.

 Don't let DDM and the gt getalong gang get to ya'll . They always run to the one spot that there motor shines in. But you don't see the vids of the places that they don't because the camera always goes black! lmao!

I'm gonna start making vid's of the GT guys down here! Sorry just got to do it! had the perfect chance to the other day, but felt bad for the guy! He jumped a bank to get into a small canal and over shot it and nose dove into a patch of canes as did I except i backed right out and he sat there spinning his prop and wiggling that poor motor until he wore himself out. After who knows how long he finally said please pull my ass out  . Wasn't any mud just deep water. Not to impressive, he might as well have been in a GD!
