Post subject: | The new Hammer Prop on an HD |
I ran the new MB Hammer prop on my HD 5500 CDI pushing the 1851 Excel F4 and it was very impressive. This prop was purpose built by MB and Mercury for the new MB models to give max thrust while in reverse, however it performed really well on my modded Hyper Drive. The new prop is much beefier than the standard Big Blade, blades and hub are larger and thicker, it has more pitch, and weighs about 1.5 pounds more compared. Diameter measures 12.75". Running both props in the same runs back to back, the Hammer gives a much improved hole shot over the Big Blade. It got my heavy boat on plane and up to max speed in half the distance- both from dead stop and from idle speed. My motor has 38/46 gears, 45mag internals, Single carb, heads, and high rev CDI coils but when running the Big Blade WOT I am still on the 4700 rev limiter. With this prop starting at the same trim position I had maxed out with the BB, I am able to bump the trim up 3-4 times to get the prop up higher to the sweet spot while maxing at 4550 RPM WOT with just me in the boat. I recorded 1MPH max speed difference topping out at 33MPH on the GPS in deep water, but the hole shot and running lower RPM off the rev limiter was what I was looking for. The larger hub is designed for the MB outdrives with the same diameter as the bearing housing to minimize turbulence going into the blades while running. Its made out of a proprietary Merc stainless alloy and I expect the thicker blades to last longer thumping stumps and running the silty clay and sandy areas I run. I took the boat into the shallows until I ran out of water. With the back of the boat sitting in the silty clay bottom, I just punched the throttle and it got up on plane w/o having to muscle the tiller. Much better compared to the Big Blade taking off from the same spot. I have been playing with re-pitched and modified BB props for years and this is what I have been looking for. Although they were built to ship with the new motors, they told me these will be available for purchase and shipping to the general public by the end of the month. If you have a modded motor that will turn it, I expect you will like the performance of this new blade. I will run it under load and post up more. |

Has MB produced the hex nut adapter yet, for those of us who have the threaded shafts? I know they were talking about it 2 years ago. |

I assume this prop is considered a little too much beef for a stock setup? Sent from my MB865 using Tapatalk 2 |

Hmmm. No props from Mercury yet.
No, and we are very busy with the Sport Vs this week so I didn't think about it. But since you brought it up I am disappointed and will call to find out where they are. I have one, but you couldn't pry it from my cold dying hands.
|

Post subject: | Re: The new Hammer Prop on an HD |
why would anyone want a prop that is going to drop that many rpms on a modded motor. to gain one mph thats more stress on the motor for no reason at all. and someone that wants to put this on a stock motor is going to complain that they cant trun it watch and see |

I've asked several people this but you seems like you may know. I have a BD 4500 that is stock except duals. You think I can handle it? |

If you are not bumping the limiter now you don't want to go w/ the hammer. As DB8 stated, he was on the limiter w/out ever getting the most from his trim. The increase in pitch makes the prop take a more aggressive bite at the water and lowers your rpms. W/out internals you don't need to go that route. Stay w/ the big blade. |

I am running a mud buddy 35 with heads single mikuni and exhaust, before the hammer prop I was all over the 4600 rev limiter. Now with the hammer I am turning about 4200 rpm loaded and 4300 empty. I have not got any speeds on it yet getting ready to hunt but the boat gets on step real quick now and you can feel a definite difference, I didn't expect it to drop my rpms that much, you really need rpms to swing it, but 4300 is where I wanted to be so all is well. |
