Post subject:  PD Anti-Kickback Bar Removal

Hope this thread is in the right forum . . . .

A year ago I added the power T&T to an '05 32PD. Followed the directions to a "T", but in the end had to make a modification to the anti-kickback bar (that's what I'm calling it - prior to power T&T it as the rod with a link on it to lock the motor in the raised position).

When I added the T&T, the bar interfered with the new, larger rollers. Quite a bit of interference - 1/2". Mistakenly I cut the bar off - a real PITA, since it is stainless. After running like this last season, I now realize that the bar should have remained, albeit modified. Now I need to remove the remains (about 4") of the bar. I removed the set screws, but am having a real issue with removing the bar. Can't drive it down, as it will hit a portion of the lower unit casting, and driving it up is a PITA as well as the bar is peening over.

Any help? I looking at potentially removing the power head to get more room to work. Possibly welding a heavy bar perpendicular and then using that to drive against.

I broke one off and had to get that piece out it was about 4" and a BIATCH..This is what i did...

Stand back and look at it.Call it a MF,Whore,Fuking Piece Of Shiat..Make sure the set screw is removed.Find a drift or piece of bar that will fit in from the bottom and start whacking with a 5lb or 10lb sledge hammer.Stan back and tell it..Yeah you MF your moving now Biatch and then go back to swinging. It will come out..You just have to call it the right name. When i drove the new one in it was so tight i had to put some KY on it.

Good Luck!!!

yank the powerhead and drop the lower unit. should take less than an hour. then take the tower off the transom mounting bracket. then it will be alot easier to drive out from the bottom. I broke off one of my bars one time, hitting stumps.

after you yank powerhead, drop lower unit (by taking out 4 or 6 bolts), and take off the reverse plate that's just sitting there...... the tower is the round pipe looking thing that the top of the lower unit turns in. it's been a while since I've done it, but I'm pretty sure there's just one big pin that goes through. this is actually what holds the motor on the transom bracket, and allows the motor to pivot up and down. i'm sure you'll figure it out when you go home and look at it.

Got home and got everything unbolted to the point that the powerhead can be pulled. Looked over the rest of the scenario and believe I understand the process Crews laid out. I'm assuming that the lower unit bolts (4ea) are the smaller bolts (11-12mm hex head) and the rest of the bolts (13mm or so hex head) are the reverse plate bolts . . . .

Since I'm doing this myself, I also cut a couple of wedges from a 2x6 that can be driven between the motor plate and reverse plate, in hopes that it will help the separation process a little. (I do have a hoist for the primary lifting.) Once I have the transom tower separated I'm hoping I can fanagle it in a press and press the kickback bar remains out.

Of note, I stopped by Mudd's (Extra Mud) and took a look at a couple of the PDs he has mounted. Interestingly enough all of the PDs he had have 2 kickback bars, one short, one longer, whereas mine only has (had) one, and no hole in the casting for another. Wonder if I should cal PD and see what the 'upgraded' tower for a LS PD runs ($$$) ?

I wouldn't spend the money on a new one unless you break it. You will be fine.

my 27 had 1 bar instead of two. so I just took the tower off, and sent it to ProDrive. they fixed it all up for me, and sent it back. then I put it all back together. I'm just trying to help this fella out. do what you want to do.

why doesn't he just take the tower off, send it to PD, and get it done right?

If the guy has enough mechanical skills to swing a hammer and hit a drift. The sob will come out. Then if he wants to add one on the other side all he has to do is drill a hole with a 1/2'' drill and install another one.But you want the guy to tear the whole fuking thing apart like you would and send it to PD.When it is an easy fix.

If you use a SOLID piece of bar to hammer on and a heavy hammer it will turn loose.
Spray some penetrating oil on the top and let It soak.Tilt the motor where you can get a good swing on it and swing like a man NOT A GIRL.
