 Long tail shafts
Hello all!
I am new to mud motors and just bought a motor to build one. My question is, what is necessary in terms of bearing, bushings, oil seals, etc for the shaft of a long tail? If anyone is willing to tell me what you have done on your motor and possibly show me some pictures I am open to any suggestions!
Thanks Brant

 Re: Long tail shafts
1-3/8" by 3/16" wall DOM tube about 60" long. 72" of 3/4" TGP (turned ground and polished) steel rod for the drive shaft. 3 1" OD X 3/4 ID bronze bushings and 6 seals with the same dimensions, a couple zerk fittings and a U-joint and Yokes to fit your shaft and motor.

 Re: Long tail shafts
Well in comparing the two, bearings are "better" than bushings speaking in terms of longevity and frictional losses. BUT... Bushing have been used in such applications (and even for far more stress and RPM) and as long as they're kept cleaned and well lubed you'll get plenty of life out of them...
All that being said. I'd use whatever is easiest to find and cheapest lol
