I just had these seals replaced less that 2 months ago and now its acting up again. It will spin from reverse back to forward fast as shit without a problem. But going from forward to reverse, sometimes it will go, sometimes I have to nudge it a little to get it going. I have greased every f'n zert I can find. Removed the plug, greased in the tower, greased the reverse ram (where the bolt goes through), the actuation gear that the bolt goes through. Starting to piss me me off. Could these seals be f'd again, or am I missing something? It almost seems to be in a bine trying to go to reverse. But once in reverse, that sucker will go back to forward without a hitch.

What does your washer stack look like where the ram connects?

I had this problem, once. I'll see if I can locate the thread on how I fixed it.

Oh yeah...also check your tension knob on the tower. It may be too loose.

Mine started the day before the season opened. I went get a seal kit and took apart to re-seal it and found the piston that is screwed onto the shaft was loose. Tightened it, and working fine now.

If it goes good after you bump it, chances are it's the "alignment", you might have the reverse gear off one tooth or like said above, the washers one or two off, it doesn't take much to bind it. Bump it in forward and then reverse and see where the play is, it'll have some but the more your eliminate, the better it will work. I'll never have another hydro reverse just because of that, you can get the sob working perfectly. Pull the motor and put everything right back how you had it and the bitch wont work. The tall long bolts that hold the two main plates together with the bushings have some play in them also. You may want to loosen them and twist the whole thing one way or the other and then tighten it back down. It's a temperamental bitch but when you get it right, it'll stay.

The tension knob does nothing on the hydro...

I didn't think the knob did. It could be alignment, because if if remove the bolt at cycle it with nothing, the ram moves back and forth without a problem. Now, its under no load so I can't really tell if the seal is leaking by, but at least it moves back and forth.

I also didn't think about the teeth alignment. Anyone has a picture of the forward position so I can see the tooth alignment.

A picture will just piss you off because what works on theirs might not work on yours. LOL

it works flawlessly now and I don't plan on pulling that motor anymore, it's had all the upgrades I'm gonna do to it.

Found the problem, at least I think. I greased everything, every f'n grease fitting I could find. but I noticed something. Where the gears mesh, was dry and had mud on them.

So I greased the shit out of it. Now the first time I did it, most of the grease got pushed out. So I caked more in. The more I cycled it, the more slicker it became. Not sure if I'm suppose to grease that, but it worked like a champ. Even greased where the ram rides on the washer placement.

I went back and read, but didn't see it anywhere other than "every grease zerk you could find." And this may be one of those... But did you find the grease zerk beneath the gear? Only reason I ask is because I have grease coming out all up underneath that gear plate....didn't notice it in your pictures.

Shit, I did the bottom bit the ram and cover must have blocked that top one. I'll hit that sucker too.

That top ones a bitch with the ram. Might want to think about extending it out...

I probably go through more grease and WD-40 than the average person. Could be why I have grease piled up around my reverse stuff....and leave a sheen in the water when I launch!
