I was out and about last night and started hearing somthing in the lower unit that sounds like it's about to really come togther......

Is there a bearing thats in the front of the shaft? I know there is one on the prop end of the motor but what about the pully side? I got something that sounds like its about to go out in there.

Everything on the prop end looks good.

I just called them about seals and bearings the other day and from what I understand there is bearings on each end but I may be wrong

Definitely sounds like a bearing, I just sent them a LU to get rebuilt, Great customer service and a quick turn around.

are the bearings pressed on or held in place with snap rings?

how often are you greasing the lower unit Pearl R. O. ?

I purge a little grease out of mine every time i use it. Cheap insurance. I've noticed that the GTRs lose grease from the design of the LU seals facing the same direction. I like the fact that it's always losing a little at the back seal. It keeps the seal clean of debris and lubed.

Well I took it apart last night and got new seals bearing race and wear sleave...... There wasn't any grease coming out the back of the shaft at all and the bearing didn't have any play or nothing in it but when I spin you can hear it roaring....Sounds like it dam dry but hell I know better!

What yall think?

can you see any wear/discoloration on the rollers or races? any "metal" in the housing?

when I was working in transmission shops we seen this a lot - bearing "looks" fine but would be very noisey under load from minute wear on rolllers/balls/races

Grease it every time you use it? F' that.

do you have a mechanics stethoscope? Very useful to pinpoint location of noises and which bearings are noisy, they are pretty cheap and kind of cool to use - you get to hear stuff like bad bearings, noisy lifters/rockers and the sweet sound of everything running in harmony.

The one thing I learned about bearings is they don't harden the the whole roller, only the surface and once that wears out they go bad pretty darn fast.

do the bearings have to be installed on the shaft in any particular way so they are lubed as you pump grease in?

Grease it before you leave then when you get back. The only real way to make sure the grease doesn't breakdown between trips. That's what I do.
