Post subject:  GTR lower unit grease?

I have 20 hrs on a motor I just bought and I grease the lower unit and the grease was light blue and looked very thin is this normal or is the seals bad? Also the clutch oil or transmission oil was very thick? New to GTR just switch from a prodrive any info appreciated! Thanks

I would add grease until fresh grease comes out from the bleeder. Most of the time the grease will come out "milky" if you have a seal leak. As for as the oil in the planetary gear, mine was thick on my last motor. Just change it with what you are running in the engine. I have some friends that still use synthetic gear lube in their planetary gear. On my new motor, I'm probably going to use Rotella T 15w40 or the Amsoil Small Engine oil in the engine so I'm sure that's what I'll put in the transmission. Hope this helps.

I just had the same scenario that you had. Referred to the owners manual and it stated that the clutch comes from the factory with grease, not oil. Scared me at first until I read the manual.

My grease came out almost gray at 20 hours. I pumped it full of fresh grease and fired it back up.

Are you using the grease that GTR recommends? It's supposed to be blue.

No I'm using a red grease from a local store that's for chasis. Shafts and wheel bearings.

You better change that cheap shit out more often. I would at least use the Lucas marine greasevif your not going to use what GT recommends.

Most good marine grease is blue. Make sure to spend money on your grease. That cheap shit breaks down way too fast

Yea but it ain't that cheap red grease. All three of those are high performance grease.

I looked up the numbers a while ago, and the AMS and Lucas were almost identical, as far as they're testing goes. Food for thought.

And that Schaeffer grease they're putting in the new engines isn't a marine grease, it's just a High Temp/ High Pres grease.

The GTR people when called about not finding the Amsoil grease, they recommended Schaeffer 238 moly supreme, was around $70 for 12 tubes delivered to front door. Its a extreme pressure, waterproof high temp synthetic blend.
