The one on the left, the seals were flush with the outer edge. |

It shouldn't matter what year the motor was made, it matters what L/U you have (the old or new style). I have the new style and it looks like the seal on the left. Mitch, gathering that you said you haven't had an issue in 4 years and no plug in the mid section tells me your more than likely running the old style L/U and the nut you recieved is for the new type ( the new style L/U has a small knuckle like gusset right on top of the gear housing). I'm 99.9% sure the seals are the same and you can just swap them out if your in a pinch. |

Thanks BB. Another question, do I have a mixed PD. Here are some additional photos. Is this the casting gusset your referring to? PB010577.JPG No plug. PB010576.JPG I'm just being cautious, seeing as the original nut/ seal pack is an 1/8" or so longer in thread area and the seals are recessed when compared to the one sent out. The 4 year reference was in regards to my previous 27PD and this one, which I've only had since Feb/March 08. |

The new LU had a change in the upper seal and there is a zerk behind that pipe plug located on the tower. That is a new style LU but I couldn't tell you if it has the the upper seal/bearing with the zert. When I got the new LU I had to drill & tap the tower plug to be able to reach the new bearing/seal zert. The lower units are the same as far as I know with a few internal upgrades over the years but they all retrofit to existing units. |

Only way you gonna knoe for sure is to frop the LU and take a look at the top seal and see if it has the zert. Could have been a new style LU built right before the seal change, if there were any built like that. |

The new L/U is made by a different manufacturer and was redesigned with an upper greased bearing from the start, unlike the old type where the upper bearing was lubricated from the oil bath by a spiral pick up on the upper shaft. The problem with this design was that in certain situations the oil pick up would not work if there was a low oil level in the L/U, resulting in the upper bearing running dry and failing. I seriously think that this unit just slipped though the cracks during the new L/U swap over. |

Mitch, I steered you wrong Myboy. I had Chicklet dig up my old one I just changed out, an apparantly its the seal nut on the right for the new style L/U not the left. Sorry Bro! My humble appologies. A couple pics complements of Chicklet! ( I'm stuck at work). |

So the one with the recess and longer threads is for the newer L/U? If that's the case I still need to drop the L/U and check/tap for a pipe plug correct? Thanks Chicklet ![]() |

Well I dropped the L/U and I do have the updated lower seal system, but the upper shaft housng is a breather tube style with no grease port. It has the gusset on the gear case with the raised Pro-Drive on the side. I know I was creating a franken engine, guess I got the drive to go with it. ![]() |
