Bent the skeg pretty good on my GTR35, trying to bend it back with out putting a "bump" in it. When I used a large pipe wrench it will bend it fine but only bends the part the jaws of the wrench cover. If I bend it using this it will bend that portion and the part the jaws aren't on will still be out of line. The bend of the skeg probably starts about 12 inches or so from the prop end and is out about 2 inches or so. I can tell it has caused a decrease in speed a little. Any ideas? |

Take it off and put it in a big vice. |

When I had my boat dealership, I used to straighten skegs on outboards. A little trickey but had to use heat. I would smoke the aluminum with an Acetylene torch using just the acetylene gas. Then I would take a rosebud tip using O2 and acetylene and heat the aluminum gently until the acetylene smoke previously applied started to dissapear. That was the hottest point the aluminum could stand without causing it to crack when bending it. You have to make sure the seals/oil/grease does not get hot in the gearcase/prop shaft housing during the heating process. Either take a wet towel and drape over it or take the housing off and dissassemble it. I would use a couple large sturdy C-clamps and wood blocks sandwiched on the skeg to press it back as straight as I could get it. Let the aluminum cool back down normally once finished. Maybe this will help you. Good luck. |

If its not cast put it in a vice. No need for heat. |
