Post subject:  Problem with PD reverse

I am having trouble with my lower unit turning to go in reverse. I checked the torsion knob, hydraulic fluid, and I can hear the pump working but the lower unit always has trouble spinning aroumd. The only way I can get it to turn is to trim the engine up and down and hit the reverse button back and forth a bunch of times to where it eventually slowly catches and spins around.
Any help/advice would be appreciated.

The Pro drives use a Shallco rocker switch that carries the load, No relays for auto reverse, If you have a switch issue where when you press the button nothing happens then it eventually catches, your switch slider is worn.

If you are hearing the pump spin with no action on the ram, make sure there is indeed enough fluid and check for leaks. A pump turning with no rod action almost always indicates air in the system.

Thats the old switch t marcus.

Depending what year his motor is there is a relay on the pump. Its basically a winch relay. Mine went out and it was doing similair to what he said

First thing you need to do is make sure the battery is fully charged. Many times the battery will slowly weaken and then the trim or reverse on a PD wont work due to loss in amps and all that is needed is a fresh charge. Depending on what you're doing the charging system on the Briggs doesn't always keep it topped off.

Thanks for the responses.
Checked the battery, it's fine. Have an onboard charger. All electrical leads seems to be fine.
I greased the shit out of it and cleaned up some of the old grease. Still no dice. I can get it to turn 180 to reverse if I pull on the lower unit while hitting the button and the hydraulics helps a little. It turns to go back in forward by itself with no problem at all. 2013 setup..

Got to be something in the actuator. I unbolted the end of the ram and it's still doing the same thing. Moving very slowly in reverse.

You unbolted it from the half moon gear and it won't stroke?

If so, several things to troubleshoot. Make sure you have fluid in your hydraulic reservoir. Then, try bleeding your hydraulic lines.

Can't remember if 2013 was a single or dual pump...I think single. If single, selector switch could be bad. Or, ram unit.

If double, swap out hydraulic hoses for trim with your reverse. In fact, you can probably do this with the single unit. If nothing else, swap the reverse/forward hoses and see if it acts the same in the opposite direction or if it's still bad in the same direction.

Yes. When I hit the reverse button it retracts very slowly, sometimes catching and acting normal half way retracted but most of the time it just barely retracts. I'm pretty sure it's a bouble pump as it has two hoses per actuator, trim and reverse. I'll try swapping the hoses around tomorrow.
Thanks to all.

Yep, sounds like a bad seal and it's leaking around.

Just had a similar issue today, the cylinder would retract fine, but would not extend without assistance. We swapped the hydraulic cylinder out as a test and it worked like new ( bad seal). Moisture/contaminated fluid will destroy the seals.
