The GAT will take place the weekend of March 22, 2014. We will begin at the launch in Bayou Sorrel on the inside of the protection levee, so we don't have to deal with the locks and proceed to cross the basin to either Butte LaRose or Henderson depending on the status of the gates in the canal south of the Pontoon Bridge near Butte Larose. The corps of engineers set out several primitive campsites recently in the basin, where we can camp out if that's what ya'll would like to do. Otherwise, its gonna be like a long trip. I'll map out the route and post it up here for everyone to see so we can plan gas supply logistics. I'll need a couple of volunteers to reconnoiter the route with me next weekend, Saturday March 14, 2014. PM me if you can help with this. We'll leave early in the morning in my boat from Bayou Sorrel, and alternate drivers if I get too tired. I'll arrange someone to drive my truck and trailer to our destination to pick us up. This is quick, I know. But I don't like waiting around for a later date. Let's do it now. The poll I put up indicated 5 voters were interested in the March 22 date. I don't care how many we have, even if it's just 4 or 5 boats or less, it will be lots of fun and an adventure. We'll plan for something to eat for lunch and dinner that night, and breakfast the next morning. If you've got a large tent, bring it. If you've got a portable cooking set up, bring it. If you've got gas or kerosene lanterns, bring them. Please post your names in this thread if you would like to attend. More details will follow. |

Bayou sorrel to Henderson ain't but about 35 miles. Shit I run that far round trip for a morning duck hunt. Y'all could knock that out in just under 2 hours, not 2 days. |

Not sure about it being just 35 miles, but if it is I can make it last a lot longer by taking a more circuitous route. It'll be fun no matter what. Old School: why don't you foe me, won't you please. |

Yup, that's the route I would use. That was my initial estimate, I think, but somebody was saying it was 60 miles. Maybe they were referring to a route going through Morgan City. But thanks, that makes this an easy one day trip and no need to spend the night, unless everyone wants, too. If we can get to Henderson in that short a time period, maybe we can extend the route all the way to the locks at Cataubla, which would add another hour or so, with some site seeing in between. Or maybe we could dip down further south and cross over to the main channel from a different route. I will investigate further. |

That was me. I said it was 85 from plaquemine to krotz springs and 65 from the locks to krotz springs. That was using a slightly longer route going south from sorrel to hit the river. |

I really like the idea of a multi day trip across the basin in mud boats camping along the way. Take it slow, enjoy the scenery, take a very indirect route...... Hell, I'm even free at that time. I couldn't do it unless you signed a hold harmless agreement with me that anything that happened to you on the trip would not come back to haunt me criminally or civilly. (Is civilly a word? Looks weird but it's in my autocorrect....) Since that's not a reasonable request on my part, have fun on the ride if you go. I look forward to seeing some nice pics...... If you are leery of posting publicly that you want to make this trip, then pm me. If I get no takers, I'll do it my self and document it with my GoPro. |

It's looking more like this is going to have to be a there and back trip where we spend the night at my camp on the River. The logistics of launching in Belle River and trying to get back there the same day to pick up the trucks and trailers is a logistical problem. Round trip in a car is 3.5 hours. Someone would have to meet us at our destination, drive us all the way to Belle River, then we'd drive back to our destination to pick up the boats. To me, that's just too much inconvenience. Instead, we can take all day Saturday to make the trip to Henderson. Have someone pick us up there and take us to my camp 20 minuets away. We'll stay at my camp, cook dinner, drink, play cards, whatever. The next morning, we are brought to the landing and we drive the boats back to Belle River, but on a different route to keep it interesting. Any other ideas? |

Just checked the gates south of pontoon bridge and there's no way to go through them to get into Henderson. It's a raging torrent headed south with about a foot drop. So final destination will be launch at Butte LaRose. More details tomorrow. |
