Post subject: | Longtail Hunt Deck Build |
After watching the evolution of the "hunt deck" and it's usefulness over the last few years I had to try something out. I always wondered why no one ever built a hunt deck to float a longtail motor. Does anybody have any reason as to why? I see pods welded onto transoms but never a full hunt deck. I built this boat out of wood in the interest of cost and lack of any aluminum boat builders nearby. (plus if it didn't work, I ain't out much) No plans, just winged it so please don't critique the fit and finish. It's the design I wanted to try. I've built a couple of pirogues before so it wasn't my first boat. Couple of ???: Why doesn't anyone manufacture an aluminum boat like this for a longtail mm? Anyone ever hang a longtail on the back of the hunt deck and see what it would do? Here's what I built: |

I notice you did not mount the motor on the actual huntdeck. Will you still be able to dig deep, or will you hit the deck? |

Everyone running longtails has had to fight with them digging a squatted boat out of the mud. (I've screwed a whole longtail straight up and down digging to make forward progress. I've even broke a cav plate off trying to get prop out after it got screwed down one too many times.) I built this thing so I don't have to dig deep, I also triple cup my wheel so it bites better when I run out of water. My wheel will be about 2 feet under the boat if it gets to the point of hitting my deck, my experience has been if I'm digging that deep, I'm not going to make any forward progress, time to get out and start draggin'. This boat should slide before I ever need to dig like that. After floating it and running it here around the local lake I have wondered how it would float hanging of the back of the deck. Problem is I really like the way it runs now. That's why I was asking if anyone else has ever run one all the way to the back of the hunt deck. |

Looks like it'll dig as far as I'll ever want it too. |

Sponge painted! I'm forever done with the stencil gig, sponge all the way for me after trying it for the first time yesterday. I had an old grout sponge laying around and tore pieces out of it, spray rattle can camo paint on the sponge and smashed it on the boat. That was only one $4 can of camo green spray paint too. I'm going to add a lighter shade of green to try to get a military ACUPAT look. Should blend with anything I hunt in. |
