 new 2012 1860 Extreme w/ GTR35
I just bought a new 1860 Extreme with the cdi GTR 35 motor and after reading several other peoples posts about the speeds they are getting im a little concerned. I see people posting speeds of 28 and 30 mph with boats that are the same length and width. With myself 160lbs and 6 gal. of gas I am only getting around 22 or 23 mph wide open(reading on gps). The boat is trimmed properly with the prop half in and half out of water. My in the water rpms are 3700. I checked it out of the water and it idles at 1200 and wide open it is around 4100. The motor is in the middle hole. Running premium gas. The speeds were recorded in deep water in a lake. I wasnt expecting a speed boat but I was hoping to see faster speeds than 23mph. ANY IDEAS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED

I agree, that you should probably see another 2-3 mph out of that set up, but don't pay too much attention to the speeds posted around here- most are exaggerated. Sounds like a 25-27mph stock set up. I am mot a gator guy so I can't help you with the set up. Sounds like your idle could be turned up a little to around 4250 out of the water, but your in the water RPM's are about right.

I figured that the speeds that other people put might be a little off but it just seems like it should be quicker. I dont know if i should try to move up to the top hole or what to do.

turn them rpms up. I run almost 4150 but thats in a pd. Same engine turn that shit up and trim up until you see 4000 at least on your tach. and try the top hole

 Re: new 2012 1860 Extreme w/ GTR35
Your oow Rpms on a CDI motor should be 4350. Really, it should b bouncing off the rev limiter. The CDI motor is different in that respect from the older motors. At least that is how my PD was setup. It doesn't need 2 b governed down out of water because u got a built in rev limiter. Make sure u can hit the rev limiter out the water and ho for a ride.

 Re: new 2012 1860 Extreme w/ GTR35
I just went out in the garage and started it up and it bounces off the rev limiter at 4150rpms. Should it be adjusted higher than that. If so do you think 200 rpms will make a difference? Thanks again for the help.

 Re: new 2012 1860 Extreme w/ GTR35
Would the top hole help with speed? Maybe im not understanding correctly. The kind of speeds that kungfo is getting was what i was hoping for. Also i failed to mention the motor only has 5 hours on it. Is it possible that it will get better as it breaks in? Maybe im over thinking it and it, I'm just trying to get it fine tuned. Thanks all for the input

I would think you should be getting at least 27-28 empty. SP is right, the numbers get a little skewed here at times but something is not right.

 Re: new 2012 1860 Extreme w/ GTR35
A good way to check your trim setting is to take your gps and check your rpms as you adjust your trim. You start trimming up,as you do your rpm's and speed will come up. Then you should reach a point where your rpms will still increase but your speed will drop off. This is the point that it is trimmed too high and you will see no gains from trimming any higher so you just bump it back down a little bit. I never look to see how the prop is riding.
Some combos run better with the pin in the top hole but if you need to grind out of something you cannot trim down as far in the top hole. That's why alot of us have two pins in the transom bracket.

What do you have in your boat!! Some guys put slot of add ons in their boat and expect it to run like a tiller model stripped out!! When people ask me after I look at their boats I ask if you was going to put a outboard motor on your boat what size would it be!! Most response is a 70 or 90 !! So with that said it's a 35 hp lawn mower engine!!!!

It is a bare boat. The only thing in it is the rear drivers side box.
