Which of those speeds can you run constant?? Seems like a big gap...

Alright guys I am looking for some of your opinions. I have a wooden boat. The boat is a 1448. It is built on a Stauter frame. Stauter was a company out of Mobile, Al. I have been duck hunting out of mine for 10 years now. Currently has a 25 outboard. In the past I have been hunting on the river and lakes with primarily deep water. I moved down to the coast in the last year and look forward to hunting in the delta of the causeway in the upper mobile bay. The delta is very shallow and gets difficult to hunt with an outboard. Would you recommend putting a mud motor on the boat? From riding around with friends that have boats wit h mud motors there are not any stumps. Will mostly be mud. Do you have any concern that riding in the mud be harmful to the hull. The hull has a 3/4 thick marine plywood with several coats of glovet and paint. Look forward to your opinions. |

Short answer: 14 x 48 a bit too short. Also, transom angles may be incompatible with Mudmotor. Is this a flat? If modified V bottom then absolutely don't do it. |

Ok my boat is made like a stature built. The company is out of mobile,al. Google and you can see. What about the angle would affect the motor. DGUIDY let me know what you think. |

I recently built a 14'7" duckhunter wood/fiberglass boat and put a 23 hp Dixie on it. It runs great and is fun to drive. With that being said, I just looked at the Stauter built boats on Google. Im sure that a mud motor would push the boat, but I would be concerned with the V hull design. My boat has a fairly flat bottom and performs well. Worst case scenario, you buy the motor and it does not work well. Buy a different boat. Small jon boats are relatively cheap on the used market. A 14-16 foot jon boat would run great with that motor. |

Yeah thanks. My boat is not a stauter just built similar. My boat is a built much more flat than the stauter. I was looking at the 23 Dixie. |

Post pics so we can give you better advice. Measure transom height and angle. Measure transom height plumb to bottom not length of transom flush. |

Ok I'll take some pics tonight. The transom I measured yesterday to be 16 inches flush. I will measure with plumb tonight. |

I've been running Stauters all my life, and I wouldn't think a mudmotor would work too well on them. Stauters are fairly heavy for their size for one thing. One reason the boats are so great for our Delta is the semi v bottom that helps out in the choppy conditions that we get regularly; this is also not great for a mudmotor. Finally, if the "mud flats" you're referring to are the ones around the causeway, those are extremely sandy, and the mudmotor doesn't like them one bit. I use mine more in the sloughs and bayous a little further north where I encounter some mud, but mostly logs, and other obstacles that I wouldn't recommend taking a wood boat over. There are a few bays just north of the causeway (Bay Grass, Upper Polecat, Delvan, Chacolotta, Big & Little Bay John, Big & Little Bateau Bays) that it would be useful in; these bays are full of too much grass to run an outboard in and have enough water for a semi v bottom. Hey guys I don't know how to post pictures. I measured the transom at plumb is 16 1/2" and the angle of the transom is 15 degrees. I'll post pics as soon as i figure out how. |

So you think a mud motor will work dguidry? After seeing the boat. I think the boat will ride ok just worried about weight of motor? What is your opinion on this? My outboard weighs approximatley 120 pounds. |

thanks dguidry I think that is what I will do. I have a good friend that runs a mud buddy 23 and we are going to stick his motor on the boat and give it a try. And yes the boat is pretty light. Two men can pick up just the hull. My dad and myself turn it over every two years and I repair any nicks and repaint the bottom. Thank you for your help dguidry. I will let you know what I come up with. |

We'll guys I got a mud motor. I put a mudbuddy 23. After building up my transom it runs good in deep water I have yet to try it in the mud. I'm getting speeds around 23 or 23. No speed demon but will get you to the ducks. Wooden mud boats the next generation. |

Alright guys I have only been out once all speeds were in deep water. I was using a speedometer in my iPhone so I'm not sure how accurate the speeds were, but it bumped 23 one time and would you constant at 21. I will post pics and video as soon as I take it out again. |
