I'm got a alumaweld 14'50" flat bottom and in the shallow water and in the mud it runs like a scalded dog but in open water it falls on it's face and won't plane out ! I'm running a 24 hp Honda and struggling to figure out why it's doing this? Is it ass heavy I think maybe I moved fuel cell to center bench n spare gas tank n still won't plane out! Just got boat and have only had one day to mess with it! I'm fixing to move battery up towards front as well! I just don't want to put a bunch of weight n front n then it fall on it's face in the mud either? Also the transom is 16" and it's a 15" transom on motor could that also be part of the problem?ImageUploadedByTapatalk1373077437.084450.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1373077490.344099.jpg

It's running I wanna say 4400 out of water I can't remember what it was running in open water off top of my head! In mud n shallows it's running about 3420 n moving pretty good speed!

Boats 16" transom not motors 15 " prop has some wear but not to bad I don't think! I've only had this sd for about a month n had it on a 1648 mod v n would plane out in open water but wasn't as strong in the muck so got this boat instead!

As the governor I'm not a 100 percent sure it sounds sound but definitely not red lining so to say! I think it could go more but don't wanna per do it n blow motor

I'm betting its your load that has to do with most of it. How big a guy are you ? You don't have to answer that but keep it on your mind. You and that motor in the back on a 14 footer ? I can get a 14 to plane out with 10 hp. and a guy that weighs 260 but have to adjust the the load and trim. If you can get it to plane in open water you should be just fine in the thick stuff. I'd take it back out and play with that load.

Looking at 2nd pic, doesn't look like boards come out past transom. Check bottom of boat for a hook (big inward dent near transom)

The prop is 15"?

Sell the 14 footer or cut down transom......thats where I would start...also, what is the transom angle? Is it running nose high in the deep water?

Try moving the gas tank and battery forward. If you don't want to move everything yet, put a sand bag up front and run it just to see if that helps. If it does then move everything else. Just something to try.

Post subject:  Re: New boat won't plane in open water

Yeah I've move all the load minus my 240 lb ass n moved it all up front! But before I do anything I've got a wheel bearing that blew out n got to replace spindle n bearing! Hadn't had it but a few days!! No the prop is the recommended 11x10 has some wear on it! Not sure exactly of transom angle yet! And yes the nose is pointing sky high! Hopin to have it back on water tomorrow afternoon evening! Once again thanks for the help! N I will check tonite when I get home from work to check for hooks tonite! If there is hooks n how else can you fix that if you cannot beat it out?

Sell the boat.....get what you can for it now because even if you get it to plane in deepwater, you will destroy it in shallow water.. it will be soooo hooked up that it will continue to rob performance. Get a boat with longitudinal runners to prevent hooks better and get a boat that will be balanced and not run nose high...you either need to go to a 1460 or wider or go longer with a 44-50" bottom...

Right now I'm not In position to buy a rig like that cause of in process of buying new home! Hopefully have one after season is over! But will definitely be at least a 16'

Seems this is a load and boat size prob. This is only a 14' boat and its 50" wide. Ever try getting a square box ta plane out?? It don't work. Fer the size a guy ya are ya gotta go fer a longer boat ta balance the fulcrum er mid point. Think of it like a teeter totter. Got to much weight on one side the other ain't never comin down. Now think of the size a yer boat. Even if ya balance the load ta the front there ain't enough weight ta offset you in the back. Now think of a 18 footer. There's a lot more leverage in length ta offset ya.

Did you check the bottom out for a hook? Just use a straight edge & look for a gap. If the hull's hooked at the transom, it'll act as if it wants to plane, but never actually breaks over. Dragging it around on that trailer without the boards sticking out past the transom will definitely do it, if it hasn't already.

Kinda, it keeps trying to pick up the bow, then falls back down, repeated. Free to check anyhow, & like I said earlier, if it ain't already, it will be setup like that.

No I hadn't yet I honestly forgot to even look at that after u said something about it!! I've also got a 25 hp gdLT if I thru some pods on there do you guys believe that could help boat sale if I decided to go that route instead to buy another boat!

Post subject:  Re: New boat won't plane in open water

I had a 1442 with a 27 pd boat ran great with 2 people 27-28 mph, but would not get up with 3 people. I added the pods it would get up with 3 people ran about 20. Sold the boat and purchased a 1652 haven't looked back since. I dont get to play in the mud except one time a year so i had to setup for deep water. Buy pods or Fabricate them too get you by till you can buy another boat, or stay shallow

Post subject:  Re: New boat won't plane in open water

Don't listen ta that ^^^. Pods SUCK on SD's. You need ta go longer is the end result. You could add a hunt deck instead a pods and that would help, but do not do pods. They will kill yer SD performance.

Post subject:  Re: New boat won't plane in open water

I've heard that and asked about them on hear and have researches it also! I've thought about adding a hunt deck but not real sure on how one should design one or how they would hold up being added on aftermarket! I've looked some on here trying to find info on people that have done that but haven't found much results! I really appreciate all the help guys thanks a lot! I've been thinking about selling all my field setup haven't really used them n couple years n maybe help buy a new boat!

Also wondered if my long tail would do any better and selling it together! Might try that tomorrow after I run the sd on it!

Post subject:  Re: New boat won't plane in open water

I'm located in sw IN! I did look at by transom n didn't see none! But didn't look much more really busy day trying to chance down spindle for buddy's trailer n bearings! N replaced my bearings on my boat trailer today as well!!

Post subject:  Re: New boat won't plane in open water

And yes I've come to realize that the length is a lot bigger issue than I originally thought as well as the width!! I'm thinking about a minimum 16' but no longer than a 17' and about 44-46" wide! Also probably another stupid question but how do. They measure the prop for wear? Mines a 11x10 but not sure how to really measure it correctly!

Author:  Team Camo [ Mon Jul 08, 2013 10:21 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: New boat won't plane in open water

Tape measure across widest part. If the prop is 10-1/2 or less, it's time to replace it.

Post subject:  Re: New boat won't plane in open water

Ok give me a couple minutes to find tape measure n ill check it real quick!

Post subject:  Re: New boat won't plane in open water

Prop looks like it's still good, just judging from the pic

Author:  Jethro48 [ Mon Jul 08, 2013 10:49 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: New boat won't plane in open water

Prop is exactly 10-1/2" at widest point! I also think govener needs bumped up! I'm running about 400-600 rpm below what it should!

You have a 20 h mud motor. Slap a yami 40 on the back she'll run

Post subject:  Re: New boat won't plane in open water

It's a 24 n ill pass don't care for out boards! Seen to many buddies pushing boats or cleaning out ports in the back water to keep it from frying impellers! Ill stick to my sd!

At six to 8 mph go ahead buy a 35 gtr or start walkin

Sorry getting more than that! But I'm not gonna sit here n get in a pissin match! Pointless! N waste of time with useless info!

Author:  ak [ Mon Jul 08, 2013 11:25 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: New boat won't plane in open water

Well you definetly would not win in a pissin match but a 20 hp sd on a 16ft alumna craft with pods and a jack plate is retarded. That boat needs a 40 yami short shaft or sale the boat and get 14ft mud boat
