I have a 1544 jon with a Copperhead 23. Seems like the perfect combination, but I don't know about going much heavier on the motor, it's a lot of stress on a flimsy jon boat. The boat runs pretty good, does 24-25mph with 2 people (400+ lbs). Never ran it alone yet but I'm guessing about 27mph. I'm very happy with it.

I have a 23hp Copperhead on my 1442 alumacraft flatbottum. Thing absolutely hauls for a small boat. I hit 29 on my garmin with just me, a battery, and a trolling motor plus 10 lbs of other stuff. What sucks tho is that my transom is about 2" too tall. I have trim it down to get any prop in the water and by doing that the front is plowing at WOT even with all of the weight in the very back. Oh well, not the end of the world but damn if the transom was built specifically for this motor it would no doubt do 30 plus. It has more ass than my 4-stroke 20 hp OB which pushes my 1542 31mph with just me and fuel. But keep in mind that im talking just about as light of a load as you can get. Havent loaded it to the limit yet.
