considering the weight of a j16 I would say SLOW. least until you hit a log and poke a hole in it.

PM me if you want the long version but I had a J-16 with a GTR 35 on it. Ended up suing Carolina Skiff and Metro Boating here in New Orleans after they burned me.

The whole story was on here but I don't think the old threads are still around.

btmannin, here it is:

I bought a brand new J-16 hull. Boat is short and light so it porpoised. When I drilled holes on the bottom to attaché wedges I got a face full of water from the "sealed" hull. Metro Boating wanted to put a drain tube/plug in the sealed hull, not even close to being a proper repair. Dealer & CS told me water in hull was no big deal. Carolina Skiff told me I had to take it to the manufacturing plant in Waycross, GA on my nickel to even look at it. Sued in small claims court. Me vs. three corp. guys, two dealer guys and a politically connected lawyer I went to high school with (he apologized before it started for what he did to me). Can you say knife to a gunfight. While I was losing in court CS lied and said they had offered to truck hull to GA. Because of this, I got them to put it on a flatbed. I am not sure what repairs they performed in GA. My lawyer convinced me to give it up and I sold it "fully repaired" from Carolina Skiff right off the dealers lot. Much happier with my new boat. Only lost every penny I spent on that stupid boat and then some. I hope they enjoy the money they cost me because I sure do enjoy telling anyone who will listen that they screwed me.

This is a very short version of a months long adventure and does not do what they put me through justice.

Find him a 13' Whaler instead. Much better boat. I had one with a 25hp that ran great.

If he is coaching at JYC I am sure there are a few Whaler nuts that can help him look at them to make sure he gets one in good shape. They can end up with water in the hull too if not taken care of.

A guide down here has a 35GTR on a j16. He likes his rig.

They do hold water. When another buddy of mine redid his he hung it up by the bow from the red iron in his shop, drilled holes in the transom and let the water drain for several days.
