Boat: 2013 1744 Alweld mudboat tapered chine tall transom full level flotation fully welded floor Motor: 2012 Mud Buddy HD 23 W/ heads decked .035 BPS cam stock 35 hp carb and gutted exhaust Prop: Mud Buddy Big Blade 12.25 x 10 finished all the motor work and got out scouting for duck season. With a gutted exhaust but mostly stock motor 2 people and fishing load I would typically run about 20 mph (honest GPS speeds). Today running for the first time with mods I ran 23-24 @ 4000rpms. Didnt really give it a fine tune trim or shuffle weight for top speed but I think I might be able to squeeze another few mph out of her based on rpms. I was running with 2 people 150, 220. 2 batteries, trolling motor, a cooler, tool box and other misc gear 6 gallons gas. What I like best is that now this motor doesnt bog down or think about dying when digging in the thick shit. Spent most of the time just running 3500-3600 rpms @20 mph and have more room to give when needed. I stopped in bout 2" of water bottomed out on mud and motor didn't stutter just dug in and rolled out. Cant wait to test with a full hunt load but judging by today's run it really doesnt get bogged down like it used to. Cost for the stage 2 upgrades was less than $1000 with gaskets and bunch of differents jets for testing. Cant complain with a solid 3-4 mph gain on a small motor. Im positive I can turn a little more than 4000rpms and increase speed a little more once I get some fine tuning done I know im running a little rich right now. |

When I got it it was just OD green. I did the paint myself and added the sears hydroturf. Its an open layout with rear pods and a 52" front deck trolling motor bracket. I also put on a rigid spot light. I bought motor seperate but could have done package deal. It has a smooth bottom no ribs ecexcept for a 1" 45 degree "angle iron" rib pressed in down the middle. I wish there was more options up here with builders. Its a nice boat and works very good with a small motor for what I do. If I was to do it again I would have 3/16 bottom instead of the all .100. I did custom order the size and the few options like wiring for nav lights and such. I wanted the biggest boat I could get that would still perform good with a 23. Alweld started making a mud boat a couple years ago. The nice thing about alweld is you can get just about any size and width and have full floatation added security when water is close to freezing. |

I put a few more hours on the motor this weekend. everything runs pretty good but I need to work on the jetting a little more and get it right as I believe I'm rich on the top end I hit 4000-4100 with a 2 man hunt load 150, 220 100lb blind 2 batteries 6 gallons of gas 75 lb dog 3 dz deeks. I hit that rpm at 1/2-3/4 throttle but get no more speed or rpms at WOT. I'm still running faster loaded than I was stock completely empty. I need to play around with the pilot jet and a/f mixture at idle as it seems to get loaded up with fuel after it idles for a while. It will take a little experimenting but there is still more to be had as I havent had any drop in speed with the loads ive run. |

That's damn near my exact old boat, mine was a 1842. I even had the split pods and all. Great boat fer carrying a load no doubt. Play with it a bit bro. I had my 23 GTR stage 2 fer a couple months now. Went from runnin 25 solo ta 25 with a 600lb load by gettin the governor figured out. My guess is I'm a good 28-29 solo at bout 4,300. |

I took one of my smaller jets and drilled it out the drill bit didn't fit in a 148 that I have for no. 1 cylinder but was loose in the 154 I had in the no.2 cylinder side. Im guessing it will put me somewhere around 150-152. I wish briggs jets were cheaper 25$ a throw sucks for experimenting but it still cheaper than getting the crossover which is required to run the mikuni. I see what this does this weekend. But im prob going to leave it like it is for duck season and order smaller pilot jets and possibly different mains and see if I can get it right. I know it should be able to turn 4300 rpms. Im getting 6 mph faster loaded than I was with a stock motor and it jumps right up on plane so im pretty happy right now. Based on rpms when I ran with gps at 4000rpms rpms I was at 24 mph so upper 20s should be attainable. My hunt load is bout the same as yours 600-700 lbs |

What I like most is i can stay on step at 2800 rpms and cruise around pretty comfortable at 34-3500 rpms and dont need to keep it wot cruising around with a load. |

Yup^^^ My rpms loaded at 24 mph are about 3,800. |

If you have pretty good selection of bits you can probably solder those jets up and drill them until you figure out what you need. I've done it with jets on dirt bikes when tuning a new set up so I didn't end up with $100 worth of jets laying around that I'd never use. |

I got some other index drill bits that I will try tonight and see about going a little leaner I think somewhere in between a 144 and 148 is where I want to be. Worst case scenario is that the carb is just a little to big on top and I just limit the carb to open 3/4 the way and call it good. Biggest problem right now is the surging at idle as I have the idle screws turned out 4 turns but not much improvement in idle smoothness I will get the smaller pilots ordered as the snow blower needs new parts anyway. |

Puddler45 did you get your motor sorted out? I know this thread is a few months old, but I wanted to hear how things turned out. How do you like that alweld hull? I live outside of Port Washington and have been looking at different mud type hulls for thearshes and shallow rivers up here. |

Motor runs good enough but never got it right. Just not enough tunability with the 35 hp carb. It a little too much carb. way too rich on bottom end little lean on top when it got later in the season. If it wasn't for the low end problems like loading up with fuel and dying at idle and it falling on it face at 3/4 throttle I would try to work on it more. There arent any smaller size pilot jets available though. Im going to get a crossover and add the mikuni and be done with it. On it bigger and better things. for the price it was worth a shot eventhough I invested way to much into jetting with stocks jets being $23 a piece. Ran Mid low to mid 20's whether loaded or empty. Carb was my limiting factor. |
