friend has one. it works pretty good. light weight also. i would rate their 7hp as having almost the same speed and torque as an 8 or 9hp cause they dont loose power thru a u joint. they use an old school chain coupler. i cant say on mud but we give it hell on the rocky rivers and it holds up as well as my gdlt.

I am looking at building one similar to this motor. My question is for the shaft, does it need to be the same width of the connection coming from the motor. I am looking at hooking them together with a love joint. Or what size shaft should i use for the 7 hp motor at 55" in length?

I'm going to go with the 3/4" shaft, the length is going to be 55" and i think it should be long enough. Do you know where i can find the shaft for the motor, with the key way and threaded end? Also, do all the shafts you buy come with the same thread size or do they vary? I talked with my mechanic at my office and he suggested the love coupler, i'll talk to him about a chain coupler, where can i find them? Appreciate your help garjacker, looking at saving a little money.

Does it matter which engine i purchase as long as it is horizontal shaft? ALso, are the threads on the shaft lefthanded, as the output shaft from the motor turns counterclockwise?

I'm looking at either the Kohler Command Pro 6 or the 7hp, maybe the Briggs & Stratton Vanguard 6. Let me know what you think of these motors in terms of overall performance and gear reductions?
