 22 kohler LT, whats wrong with this?
IMG_6053.JPGOk i think this was a kit build, i dunno. i bought this for 1600 and prolly messed up. I have never used a mud motor before but wanted a shallow running motor for rivers and duck hunting. This motor started right up and seems to run plenty smooth and fast out of the water. Ii dont have a tach and dunno if it will accept one, there is a single small yellow wire coming out that i figure is either for charging or tach i dunno. SO my problem was after taking it out on the water is its way to slow, im talking like just a few mph but i also have pull up on the handle w/ both hands to keep it in the water. The prop runs in the wake and if i slow down or turn its over. My boat is a 1542 open floor with 7' plywood deck no gear, just me a med battery and 3 gal gas tank. Thats my problem my question is is the motor build right? it seems to be pushing up instead of forward. Also if i have to remount the Cav plate how do i know where and what angle to put it at. I claim total ignorance at this point so dont hold back also what pics do you need to see i just took a few.

Definitely a home build. The angles are way too steep. Nothing to fix if you have any welding skills. I'm not sure of the angle off hand but if you plan on tackling this job I can take some measurements off mine.

The bracket and shaft scream GD, my guess would be it was a crawfish model that someone tried to put a bigger motor on and hacked it up.
What transom hieght do you have? You can bend that cav. plate up to keep the prop in the water.

My boat 15 42 alumaweld has a short transom. if i keep the thing ill re weld the cav plate and straighten it out. hopefully someone can give me some numbers/angles to go on. i hope it'll work, i may have to trade the engine for a small motor and put it on another much smaller rig. Im remaining optimistic though. Thanks in advance for yalls help. I knew this would be the best place to find good help.

If it is a go-devil a serial number should be stamped in the plate that e motor is mounted to.

It is not hard to modify anything that you have on it, the angle you are looking for should be around 13 to 14 degrees from the engine to the shaft on a normal go devil, I agree this looks like the crawfish model and I am not familiar with the specs on it
To keep the motoe in the water take a large cresent wrench and bend the 1 inch tab on the back of the cav plate till you find the spot where the motor will stay in the water, once you do that, then you can work on speed issue, prolly has to do with angle in water and fact it keeps coming out of the water

Look right under the U joint, on top of the plate, behind where the motor mounts, and see if there is a serial number and and a model number. If there is I bet it's a modified Go Devil. If you have the numbers, call the GD factory and see what they might be able to tell you about it or answer your questions. Great people to deal with if you have their machine.

I just finish building a 6.5 hp long tail for my layout boat... the shaft angle is should be between 10-15 degrees down from the engine shaft. depending on the transom heigh. measure your shaft length and transom height and do a little Trig to find the proper angle to get your prop about 3" below the water with your motor level. the cavitation plate needs to be removed and re-welded about level on the prop shaft where you want the prop to run in the water... then bend it up slightly so the water will run over the plate and push the prop down into the water while running at higher rpm's. I cut the 45 degree fins off the cavitation plate. they were really working against me in the deep mud. also the center of gravity looks off. Move the pivot point to where the motor is slightly tail heavy. you could probably use a larger skag. the rotation of the prop in the mud causes the motor to walk to the left a larger skag solved the problem for me. All this took several attempts of trial and error with mine.
