Cool, but you are hitting the same speed now that you claimed you were running with an additional 300 pounds in the boat. Still calling BS on your original claim

I thought the general consensus was long tails were not so much affected by small amounts of well proportioned weight, which just happens to be the rear of my boat.

200 pounds is not a small amount of weight in a 16x48 jon boat with a 23 hp motor. No matter how you position it add another 200 pounds to that boat and your speed will drop off sharply.


and from your original post you had an additional person @ 200 lbs, 60 lbs misc gear, and 6 gal gas @ ~36 lbs. That is 296 lbs more than your video and you wont get those speeds with that load.

the weight issue is a fair argument, but it is of no matter. With flat calm water and no wind, the boat will still run the same speed with that person sitting in the back, and yes, the day i can arrange 3 people and actually record some decent video I will.

there are variables beyond my control, such as tide, wind direction, depth of water, although the water was shallow, it was not creating that skinny water effect.

So deep water, into the wind, i recorded a speed backed by video.

I use to get 20+ when I had a 23 LT on a 14x40 Lowe tin can. Wait till about a year or two when the bottom of your boat looks like a washboard. Put some floor boards in your boat too.

thankfully south florida is all everglades and there are rarely any rocks, its all just muck and vegetation, have yet to hit a hard object besides rotten tree stumps.
Im interested in installing an aluminum floor in the boat, but there still a lot of things I wanna do before that.

quackkills, that rig is doing real well. My friend and his two sons, all well over 200# each, reach 19 mph. in their vintage Lowe rivetted jon 1648, and their 25 Kohler GD LT is also vintage. I do recommend Steelflex for the hull bottom (I am sure you are familiar with Fasco Co. in Hialeah). That speed is partly benefitted from the lightweight hull, both the Lowe and yours. We don't need .125 mud hulls here. Down the road, I bet that hull of yours would scream with an 18 Copperhead or 23 surface drive of any mfg. The only thing out in the Glades that "arrests" my hull are those near solid rafts of mud that are out there. A couple more weeks of no rain and it will be tricky getting into the marsh. I went last weekend with my wife and daughter and it is getting shallow. I put .090 gauge aluminum for my floor- I just took it out to replace the insulation/flotation I put under it and between the ribs. I also recommend putting hydroturf over the alum instead of carpetting.

I have seen those mud barges floating around, but I steer clear of them! I have looked into steel flex and frog spit and other airboat hull coatings, but I am debating how much it would actually help. I know it is an epoxy and will slide better, but it also adds weight to the hull of the boat.
My neighbor just purchased a 1448 grizzly with a 23hp dixie mud motor surface drive, and with my same exact load, his wife and a child, not a dog lol. he was barely keeping up with me. It throws a huge rooster tail and is slow to plane, and pulls hard because of prop rotation. I don't care about speed at all, and till about 3 months ago, I didn't even know what a mud boat was capable of doing. I can definitely say I like the turning abilities of the long tail and the way i can place the prop in pockets of muck to push me out of deep ruts. I bought my boat to be able to duck hunt and get places no one else can, and airboats are prohibited.
As for the floor, I want to put a real floor in, but i don't want to raise the deck at all. I have a Beavertail Pop Up blind for the boat, and standing inside the boat, I am at ideal shooting height. I don't want to be standing any higher at all. plus its just a regular jon boat and don't see the advantages of it for what I do.
Camo HydroTurf from Gator Trax will be installed on the benches and Bow before next duck season, just didn't wanna put it on now as i will beat the boat up hopefully gator hunting and hog hunting this summer.

Theres tons of guys on UWF that set up rides, but they're southernmost ride was in Lake Jessup north of Orlando, a little too far for me.

10-4, quackkills. The Steelflex is not cheap, around $100 a gallon, but we did three 1648 hull bottoms with one gallon. I am on year five and it is still lilke new. The weight is negligible, I will say my hull bottom application was only a couple of pounds. It has helped very much with veggie/mud running and makes it a lot easier to load/unload the boat from the trailer. It has only added a slight bit of drift in turns, one that can easily be learned. Well worth the cost. My floor was added to be flush with the rear half floor and sits on the ribs. I added some galvanized U channel to the centerline so that it is level and does not bow. I got tired of tripping over the ribs. I have an open hull design and I use those "bird bucket" seats from Cabelas for hunting. You can't beat the LT for our shallow water/hard bottom areas. There are times, like on the Big O, where on longer runs I wish I had a shortail but after twenty plus years running a longtail, it's ok. Keep on mudding!

glades ranger, im new at this mud boat thing and i got a 27hp GDLT with a 1524 War Eagle and i been reading that my boat will not hold up to well? Would this coating yall are talking about help me out? Any info will help. Thank you!

david95, the coating will not gain you any significant speed but will greatly reduce the friction when you are running through mud/veggies. As long as you don't abuse your boat, run gravel, jump beaver dams, etc., the coating will last several seasons. Like I said, it is not cheap but worth it for the stated reasons. I used to run an Alumaweld (before they became Xpress) 1544 with a 25 GD LT and it was good but the 16-20' hulls run better with the LT's. The pods are good with the 14-16' hulls but beyond that not really. A 1524? WarEagle?? You must mean a 1542!! I have never seen one that narrow but I started off with a 1435 jon boat and an 18 HP GD LT. Your rig/motor will be fine as long as you practice, use the kill switch, all the safety gear, not overload your boat, keep the weight balanced,etc. I relocated my battery to under the bow to help distribute the weight. You must by trial and errror make sure your prop is planing just under surface with no popouts. Any nick or wear on the your prop will greatly reduce performance. Get a backup prop asap!

Glades ranger, Ireally ain't looking for the speed just wanna protect the bottom, an haha I don't plan to jump an beaver dams or ect. I was thinking about the pods an was reading that they really don't help but maybe I will try them. And yes I meant 1542 sorry about that, and I am gonna relocate the battery and possibly the fuel tank not sure if it will help that much. I will just be careful with it and learn anything I can I really appriciate all the information! Thanks a lot.

No need to wait on your hydroturf bro. Same hydroturf been in my rig since 06 with minimal nicks in it. Note this is my one and only boat. I do everything from frogging and alligator hunting to running dogs or catching redfish. That turf is tougher than the skin on a whore's knees.

I only did the bow deck before this past duck season and it is still like new and I bought a discounted "seconds" piece that had only a slight burr in one place. I say go with the hydroturf for sure. I forgot to mention that on a rivetted boat the Steelflex will also help seal rivets to some extent. I had an 18 GD, two 25 GD's, and now my 27 Kohler MB LT and I must say the Kohler is dang dependable motor. The other motor out there that I would like to hear about is the Generac 33 that MB is marketing.
