Hey all,
New to mud motors. My buddy has had a Mudbuddy 6 hp Robin longtail pull start that has sat around for 2 years. Said if I can get it started I can use it this season. My knowledge of motors is limited, so bear with me if it sounds completely novice.
Looked at it first. There was some old gas in the tank; he said he treated it with stabilizer. Checked oil; Luckily, he emptied it. Filled the engine with oil. Filled tank with premium gas. Tried to start it up (pull start model). It would not turn over, no exhaust comes out of the carb. After 5 or 6 pulls, it backfired.
Pulled the spark plug. Looked pretty fouled. Tried cleaning, regapping, and replacing--some thing. Nothing and backfire. The plug is wet with gas when I pull it.
Put in a new plug. Tried to fire it up again. Now the engine STARTS to turn over when I start (put, put, put) with exhaust coming out of the carb. But it still won't start up. It sounds like it is trying to. Something I noticed- the propeller will spin in the correct motion as I cycle the engine. Then as the engine fails to start, the propeller will suddenly stop and/or reverse directions.
Going to replace the grease in the drive shaft and regrease everything tonight and see if that helps. Going to double check the oil level, too.
EDIT: My friend used the motor very, very little (5 times total, <10 hours) before it sat in the garage. It is basically new, just been sitting around for a few years!
Any other suggestions before I take it in?
Take it easy on me if it sounds amateur!
