Post Long tail replacement shaft
Hey guys has anyone ever had a machine shop mill your replacement shaft for a mud buddy?

Talking to the guy they owns a machine shop up the road I think it's gonna be cheaper to have it done there rather than order from mud buddy just wanted to be certain they we use the correct material.

So in machine shop lingo what is the shaft made of ?

Thanks

Just picked up a long tail shaft. Today from a local machine shop.it was for a home build but it should be the same its just 3/4" rolled steel.I had the threads cut and a 1/4" key way cut in it was $100 to have it done.

I checked with a machine shop local to me and he quoted me $50 give or take depending on what material I wanted. I told him hardened chrome steel....

He also told me to bring the frame by and he'd spec me bearings and seals to put a 7/8" shaft in mine. He would drill and re tap the prop and all as well. He said gun drilling it would help lighten it up and wouldn't hurt strength. Makes sense, we have done it to race car axles for years, they see tons more tq than that little lawn mower motor is gonna ever make on its best day.

Shop by the house quoted me dollar a foot on material, so 73, then prolly that in labor. Gonna check another shop up in Grayson county by the deer lease. Mud buddy said 170's I think. Drives me crazy you can't just order it on line from them I probably would have already but I had to call and leave a message wait for the 1 parts guy to call me back of course I was busy when he did.. just a hassle.

Thanks for the replies fellas.

For who ever needs one. Fyi. I think Huck Finn has a extra godevil longtail shaft that's in good shape that's a extra he probably would sell. He changed seal types from old style to new style set up and it requires use of a new style shaft. I think his is pre 99 and is off a 25 hp. Just a thought

Unfortunately my motor is a mud buddy with a 73 inch shaft. Therefor it's buy from mud buddy or get milled some where.

I build mine out of 17 - 4 stainless. 73 Inches with threads and a key slot ought to be around

$100.00 +- from an ordinary job shop. The hard part for many is finding a piece of 17 -4 stainless. Any carbon bearing steel is going to have a short life.

That's high prices for a shaft IMO, mines a go devil and only costs about $70 for a shaft. Same kind and amount of material. What other tooling is done to a mb shaft?

This is what they quoted me for parts on a 01 model.

Mitch,

You will need to know the length of your drive shaft when ordering, the price is $185.00
Top bearing seal is $10.00
Bottom collar $65.00
Bottom Bearing $21.00
Seal cap set $50.00
+ S&H
