Post Gd or swomp
i had about decided on a little 9hp godevil for the back of a little 14' crawdad but im reading rave reviews of these new swomp motors. I could buy a glider kit and put a honda motor on it cheaper than the godevil and good bit lighter. This motor with be used for shallow sandy/rocky rivers and some grassy places in our lakes and swamps. Want something i can drag around pretty easy when it gets beached. Prob only be riding myself and hunting gear or myself and my 2year old daughter. Like to see about 12-14mph with just me at least

what makes swomp better? Not trying to start crap throwing just curious. I know they are lighter but are they faster, easier to run, more durable etc

Theres plenty of info on this site about the differences between them. Pretty much every other major name brand of lt is better than a gd. Everyone else improved on their design, they never really did.

Plenty of go devils still running around as they just work. Ive driven about every mud motor except a boss drive and a backwater. Even a longtail with a vw engine on it. guess i need to call em and see what they say.

They all do their job and last. They're simple, and don't typically break very easily. The engine is the weak point, except for the occasional company that puts one out without care for reliability or quality. Backwater has some features the others dont, and the frame runs smoother because of it. Gd and mb both make good long tails too. I recommend the swomp. It will be money well spent.

SWOMP is faster due to direct drive/no u joint. Also a better cavitation plate set up. Versa Mount allows for multiple transom angles. SWOMP also has superior bearing and seal design.

If I was buying new - Swomp. I'd pull the trigger on a used GD with the Honda 9hp in a second though.

Backwater has a foam filled frame that limits vibration. The Versa Mount puts the engine closer to the water surface, creating a smaller angle on the driveshaft - which gives more forward thrust and eliminates the need for a u-joint.

Customer service rates with the best of them.

That's right. The prop shaft connects directly to the engines crank with a coupling. No u-joint.

Ive had zero probloms with my old GD LT. Only thing I wish id did was swivel into the boat for traveling. Ive re bushed, re sealed & added a pressure lubricater to it (mine is an ooooold 89 model) so its got everthing the new gd's have except upper bearing instead of bushing. It dont leak nothing & just plane works! Id like to swap out my hopped up (a lil) 15 vanguard for a 23 & change prop & be done! They are good VERY helpful people at backwater. GD isnt bad eather.

I agree that a GD LT works! I remember when it was the only mud motor available and both the 18 and 25 I ran were great, albeit needed more bearing and seal changes, and greasing than my later MB. The longtail platform, regardless of mfg., is a great fit in many marshes. For a DIY rig, as Phoneman7 posted, using the BW glider kit is very doable. If one is not particularly adept mechanically, buying a ready to run BW lite series LT would be my choice. I just want to reiterate, as a proud new owner of a BW, this is the new "paradigm" for LT's. BW made some much needed improvements. I still think the LT can be furthered enhanced, but I am more than pleased with my Swomp!

Id love to get a swap 23 bw, but I paid $500 for my GD LT! No its not stolen & at that price the choice for me was pertty clear LOL! When im ready to pull the trigger on another/newer motor id lean twords the bw. This gd runs the same in deep or shallow water unless its real windy or choppy water.
