1st attempt at a long tail
I know you all are probably sick of answering he been questions but hey I had to try.
Gonna start on my first longtail. I have never seen one up close in person so this is all strictly from looking at pictures and YouTube.
My shaft I'm thinking will go like this
U joint, pillow bearing, bronze bushing, bronze bushing, seal, prop does this sound right? Obviously have some greeserts in the mix and probably a spring loaded lubricator between bearing and first bushing.
Was planning on using a 6 foot 3/4inch stainless shaft and threaded on the prop end. Does it need to be tapered?
For my shaft cover I was planning on going with sched 40 pipe 1 inch ID. Will that give me room for lubrication and my bushings???
Any other tips would be greatly appreciated. Gonna put a 16 hp engine on it
Thanks
Colton

Comments:
Lots of people use and have used black iron pipe for the drive tube. It has a seam in it that needs to be removed to fit a bushing nicely. I would use a lathe for this. others have used various reamers and drill bits for this. I use drown seamless for my drive tube I fit my cast bronze bushings for .003 clearance with my stainless shaft. I use 17-4 stainless for the driveshaft. it is less common but tougher than 303 0r 304 stainless that is common ly out there. The shaft is threaded to 3/4 x 10 threads as almost all available props use that threading. No, a marine taper is not commonly used. I fill my drive tube with 70 - 90 synthetic gear lube. It is much more effective at 4,000 rpm. I put a Gits check ball valve in the drive tube to fill it with gear oil. I also put a atmospheric air outlet in the drive tube to prevent a vacuum from building and pulling water in past the bottom seal. For that motor I would use a 72" driveshaft. good luck if you have a question please ask.
