KC, pull it, jb weld, then bend away. It doesn't take impact so the holes won't hurt anything.

 Re: Best long tail?
The only thing I see better about the swomp is open water performance. Being able to let go of the tiller. Sit down and drive... Of course their speed. I find them a little harder to steer at full throttle and was maybe a tiny bit lacking in thick grass and shallows as compared to the old standard strapped to the back of my boat.

 Re: Best long tail?
Flint is set on Go Devil and that's fine. But coming from someone who has owned and put many hours on both a 23 GDLT, a 23 BW, and a 35 BW, there is not one area that my old GD outshined my SWOMP. I also want you to explain how the rounded cavitation plate chokes out the prop and doesn't perform as well as the flat cavitation plate on a GD. Makes zero sense to me. Granted, the only area I haven't ran my boat is pure mud. But I know HuckFinn ran his old 25 GDLT and his 23 BW in pure mud and I know which one he prefers.

 Re: Best long tail?
You guys like your backwaters and we like our go devils. Same as Ford vs Chevy. If I am getting a longtail, I am getting another GD. I dislike the cavitation plate on a backwater because of it's limitations. I stand by my statement. That is not a knock on backwater. Just a personal preference.

 Re: Best long tail?
I just think it'd be different if I had never owned or ran a GD. But myself and others have owned both and it seems most of those people prefer BW. So it strikes me as odd when someone says they prefer GD to BW. And as far as the cavitation plate having limitations, I believe that if a flat cavitation plate performed better than a rounded one, then that's what BW would've used. Hope everyone is happy with their motors.

 Re: Best long tail?
I'll most likely always be a GD fan. The backwater cavitation plate sparks no interest to me and neither does the clean out bearing system. I hardly ever cut the grass out from behind my jam nut and never have a leaking seal. Although I will say I replace the shaft and seals once a year because I put long hours of hard abuse while commercial fishing. Yes I have had parts break but it's to be expected. All things mechanical break at some point.
As far as mb, I despise the company and never plan to business with them even if they were have a superior product.
Just my .02

 Re: Best long tail?
The best thing about a Godevil is pretty much everything on the back end can be worked on with a 3-5 lb dead blow hammer. I had a bent shaft tubing and cocos answer was to back it up to a tree and hit it with a 4X4 chunk of wood and a hammer. Straightened it right out too.

 Re: Best long tail?
They are two completely different performing motors. I can see how opinions would be all over the place. They are both very solid built. Some of my opinion may be a little biased. I will admit that. I am on my third go devil motor. I enjoy dealing with those people. I really liked the design of my old longtail. I am a huge fan of the pressure lubricator on the back of the longtails and surface drives. The cavitation plate design on a GD allows for some diversity in conditions used. This is all just personal preference.

 Re: Best long tail?
I ran a 20HP Honda GX620 on a beavertail setup with backwater props and I can tell you one thing for sure - your boat has ALOT to do with it. I was running a riveted 1436 and sat pretty low in the water when I was running 2 men and gear. Put my motor on a 1648 and it would be a whole new world.

This thread could go on forever , or we can settle it like men and all whip out our longtails . . Seriously though if it works for you great , I've had go devils and they are great , I've said it before . Nothing wrong with go devils . I just prefer my backwater now. H Finn

 Re: Best long tail?
All these motors have their high and low points... But can it be determined which is best all around? My vote is still GD due to simplicity, easy to work on and 33 years of being proven. What happens when the lower bearing goes out on a swomp? Is it designed to still get you home like the GD bushing system is? (Honest question here not flinging shit bc maybe it is) Let's start here and have a real discussion.

Thousands of hours on the test frames that Backwater first started with.

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1424793068.447380.jpg Wasn't MB who first did the sealed bearing??? But you grease the shaft still... Sounds like a win win...... All 3 longtails are great at their own area.... GD is the best all around

 Re: Best long tail?
I tell you what, I'd trade in my 35 backwater today for a new 35 go devil. The open water speed and drive ability are nice but I don't find it performs as well as my 25 go devil did under similar conditions.

 Best long tail?
We need to have a national longtail ride and put them all up against each other. On identical boats. What a pain in the ass it would be to swap the swomp around with that bolt thru mounting bracket.

 Re: Best long tail?
Kcpanages, I go out of my way to be nice to everyone on this board. But you've got to be one simple minded SOB. Just like in the other thread about greasing a BW, you are saying I've said stuff that I never said. I never said you shouldn't grease a BW. And I never said I run the exact same conditions as you do on the gulf coast. I even admitted that I've never ran pure mud. But besides pure mud and salt water, I can't think of any conditions that you would've ran in that I haven't.

 Re: Best long tail?
Now, I will go out on a limb about MY MBLT, and backwater...... They don't balance at all! My MB, if it breaks plane, the tiller slams in the deck.... The backwater is tail heavy...... GD has a perfect balance

 Re: Best long tail?
Partner I am stating facts. I have put hundreds of hours on GDLTs that I have personally owned over the years. And now I've got right at 100 hours on Backwater motors. My Backwater motors have outperformed any longtail I've ever owned. And the overwhelming majority (Everyone but you and Delta) of people who have ran a GDLT and a BW would agree that the BW is the hands down better motor. Whatever you and Delta are doing is obviously confined to you two.
