So i got a new prop. The old one is becoming a nightmare. I made the prop wrench out of the flat stock. Got the cheaters on all the wrenches....It is turning...just very slowly and with plenty of fight. The problem im encountering is when i hold the shaft with the nut behind the prop, im very slowly turning that nut as well as cranking the prop off...Is there another place to hold the shaft besides this nut so it doesn't turn any more?...Also, if it gets really tough, they say to heat up the hub of the prop...any body try this....does it work?...I've sprayed about 2 1/2 cans of liquid wrench on it. thanks... |

My most recent experience with a stuck prop was hours of frustration; I eventually put the heat to it, with a proapne torch, oxy-acetylene too hot; heat the crap outta it and hit it with a rubber mallet, and it finally spun freely. |

I just bought a 31hp and spent about 6 hrs trying to get the prop off. After beating it for hours with everything under the sun it had unspun about 1/4". I took the heat to it and did all kind of stuff and ended up having to pull the shaft out, cutting the blades off with a cutting wheel and then cutting the prop in half to remove it. Then I just chased the threads and spun the new prop on. |

I used a drill and drilled the nut behind it until it split in half. |

i ended up calling mud buddy...the guy said take a grinder to it, cut into the side of it without hitting the threads, and then took a chisl to split it alittle bit more...Took some workin, but it came off....what a painnnnnnnnnnnn...i was definately scared taking the grinder to it like that cause i didn't want to buy a new shaft.... |

Make sure you put some anti-seize on it when you put the new one on. Also doesn't hurt to pull it off once a year and re-lube it. |

The reason it's coming off so hard is you haven't broke the prop loose from the back nut yet. You need to insert a bar into the u joint and hitting the prop with a hammer is all but a feutle attempt. I tried it. Use your wrench but before trying to get it off again, heat up the front of the prop hub red, insert a bar or large screw driver into the u joint. Get a good grip on your wrench and pull down or pull up depending on what side your on, until she pops loose. It can be a bee otch believe me I just did mine last night. But it only took me about 1 1/2 hours on mine. that includes greasing the shaft tube etc.It was my first attempt and I learned a lot. But using a hammer won't work very well. The shaft takes up the jolt like a torsion bar when it twists. Lots of muscle and keep pullin on it until it breaks loose. You will mess up your shaft threads if you keep turning it with the back nut jammed up against the prop. Good luck be patcent! LOL Smoke |
