Post subject:  Fried Wires

Hi all,
I've got a 7 hp robin, electric start from Utah Marsh Motors. Had it for 3 years and it's been nothing but trouble :x Just about every time I take it out, something doesn't work right or goes wrong.

Today, on the way back to the launch, my motor started smoking. I shut her down and paddled the rest of the way. I looked the motor over and the wires in the starter are fried, a green one and a black one (which appears to be a ground). I'm not a motorhead, although I wish I were.

What may be the cause of the fried wires? Should I just replace them or is this indicative of a larger issue? I really don't have many options in terms of repair shops in my area so I'll have to do this myself.

Thanks!

Sounds like a short somewhere in your electrical system. It sounds like a Robins motor issue more than a UMM issue. Do you have an electrical tester? Do you have any lights, electric fuel pump, or anything else wired up to the battery other than your motor? Just an idea, but your battery could be unstable also. Its not common, but I have seen that before. Are all of your connections clean? Does that motor have an electric start? have you gotten your starter or ignition wet lately?
