 Question about the prop nuts
While i was trying to take my prop off a couple of months ago I messed up the nut between the prop and the bearing seal. It seemed like at first it was attached to the shaft and now it spins on the shaft and I noticed it is rubbing on the bearing seal. Was that nut welded on at first? If it was can I try to just spin the prop off a bit and tac the but back on so its not rubbing on the seal?

Its not welded. It is threaded on as tight as possible. I would slide the shaft out as far as possible, about 7-8", before tacking just incase it gets hot and melts the seals.

the threaded portion of the shaft should not even be that close to the shaft seal housing. loosen the ujoint and slide it bak a lil, tighten the shit outta the ujoint bolt, then tighten up the nuts

i had a similar problem. We ended up having to cut the nut off and machine a new one. It was a total nightmare....When i replaced it, i put the prop nut to the end of the threads, put the new prop on, and then turned the prop nut counter clockwise to tighten it against the prop. Then put on the nut and the nylock nut.

We've been running them with the nuts tight for years. I asked the folks at GD and the reason they let them float is because they figured it lessens the chance of the prop getting stuck on the shaft. I just break mine loose every 25 hrs or so and put nickel anti-seize. I've never had a problem.

i've read otherwise. I think the standard practice was always leave play in the prop so that it would be able to turn off easier. But i read on here when you leave it loose and you hit something really hard, it will tighten up even more then if it was just tight to begin with......I put mine on tight. I'd rather have everything tight and fight to get the prop off then have it loose and i lose the prop when I'm out in the middle of no mans land

they told me that when ur running, the prop is tight against the back nut, then if u hit something it will spin jus enough to take some of the abuse off of the shaft

The props actually turns into the top nut if you think about it. At least on a 16 and 27 GD.

No foul. Ive gotten into enough pissin matchs with noobs on here about that and have proven them wrong time and time again. Hitting something tightens the prop even more and it's worse if left with slack. Its like when you put a grinding disc on a grinder just a few turns and hit the trigger to tighten it up. Its gonna be a fight to get that b*tch off even with a wrench. Try that with your podnah's grinder, he'll than you.

here is the picture of it. I know the nut is mangled. I was trying to hold on to it to turn my prop off. It just destroyed it and now it just spins free. So I'm not sure what to think. New nut would probably be the best bet.

looking at that picture is doesnt look like its rubbing. I might try to take another one. Does that look closer than it should be? The reason I'm worried is because out of the water I can almost here some metal to metal contact. I added more grease to it and I still had it.

Dayum, I'm speechless. FYI, one washer supposed to be before the prop and one after. Gap between LBH and nut should be 1/8 to 3/16.

heres what happened to mine when i was trying to get the prop off....holding the nut, turning the prop, it backed itself against the bearing cap....torture
