finding the right mud motor for my 12ft flat bottom
I understand it is a little on the small side, but I need help finding the right mud motor for my 12 ft. monark flat bottom jon boat. The boat is rated for a 5hp motor and has a max weight rating of 375 lbs. I am not joy riding with this boat I am an avid duck hunter and only need it to be able to get into some tight spots with shallow water in the marsh. I was told id fly with a 9 hp but am trully worried about the transom. It only has 1 support located in the middle of the transom, also is the 6.5 gunna be enough to move a moderately over weighted boat.
any input is helpful and appreciated I am new to the idea of long tail mud motors
thanks -matt

Check out the copperhead motors, they're getting great performance out of motors in your size. http://copperheadmfg.com/joomla/

Re: finding the right mud motor for my 12ft flat bottom
I have a 6.5hp Lt on a 12ft john that I use in my duck pond instead of paddling a pirogue. Its perfect for my small pond but I wouldnt recommend traveling any distance with two men and a load. I like the price and the weight of the 6.5hp but it bogs down easily and doesnt go much faster than a paddle when pushing a full load. Hope this helps.

Re: finding the right mud motor for my 12ft flat bottom
phatmac, I had a 6.5hp Copperhead on my 1436. I was getting max speed of 14 with me,battery, dry box, dog, small icechest, and decoys. I'd say that I had 350lbs in the boat. I traded it in and got a 10hp Copperhead. Last weekend I had 15mph+ loaded with gear. viewtopic.php?f=5&t=13996If you are worried about a loaded boat, I would go with the 10hp Copperhead. It doesn't weight but 20lbs ish more than the 6.5hp.

Re: finding the right mud motor for my 12ft flat bottom
I run a 6.5 up mud motor made from the plans off of etsy and I get about 9 mph according to my gps. My boat is a 12 foot John boat and will go anywhere there is 3 inches of water or more! It works way better than the 5 up outboard I had and a ton better than the 50 lb thrust trolling motor I had!

I run a 7 hp. Swamp Ratt Mud motor on a 13'6" Four Rivers layout boat and get about 10 mph. GPS
I paid $1550+shipping and tax for it. I love it, it comes with a kill switch, trigger throttle and powder coated frame. Its very well built.
Send me a PM if interested and I'll give you my contact for it
