Hi, This is my first longtail and don't know a whole lot about them. I got the frame off craigslist and it seems pretty sound. Bearings are smooth and the shaft is straight. looks like everything but the tiller handle motor and transom mount... The guy said it was a go devil but he never had a motor on it... I need help figuring out what size motor to run on it. The shaft is about 63", the prop is about 8" wide. shaft looks to be 1" where the motor mounts up to it. The bolt pattern for the motor is 8" x 4". Lots of pictures, please let me know if ya'll need any more info about the frame. I don't see any manufacture's marks or serial numbers anywhere. Thanks in advanced for any help identifying this frame and what motor I should use on it. I have a 14' aluminum jon boat. |

If it's a Go Devil there will be a model # and a Serial # on the top side of the transom plate under the U-joit yoke area. It don't look like a GD frame to me but it's older and I have not seen them all. If it has a GD number call the factory and talk with Warren about what you want to do. He will help ya but you will need those numbers off the frame. Duckdon |

I don't believe it's a GD, either. I've seen quite a few older ones and I don't believe it's one of those, either. |

Those welds look kinda rough, and the cavitation plate is being held on by only a weld on the front. I don't think it's a GD, it would be stouter than that, and have a spline running down the cav plate. I'm calling homemade on that one. |

The welds do look rough is why I doubted it was a GD. I'm leaning towards putting a 10-13 HP motor on it. Still havn't figured out what I'm going to do about the tiller arm... I sanded it and painted today to cover up some of that ugly. The greese fittings seem to work good and there is not play in the shaft. I can't wait to get this thing on the jon boat. |

Is that a weld bead on that propeller I see on the blades connecting to hub. That is not good right there. |

looks like a n*gger rigged bunch of metal... You definetly need to brace that cav. plate. |

That's how Scavenger Backwater Motors makes their props. Doesn't mean that it's bad, the prop is probably still balanced, it's just how it was made. Wasn't molded in one piece like some other brands, the blades are welded onto the hub. Looks like they never finished it by the way that cavitation plate is hanging on, no doubt that thing would bend and hit the prop when it got the force of some water moving over it. |

lookin at the tape measure the shaft size maybe 3/4 mght be for like a 6.5 hp to 9 hp motor and im thinkin home made job there |

Where you had the tape is where the u-joint hooks to the motor, different size blocks have different size crankshafts. You definetly need to do some more bracing to the frame and may need a new prop to get max. perfomance out of your motor... Most props are 3/4 threaded. |

That is, without a doubt. a homemade motor. The prop looks to be homebrewed too, looks like for some strange reason they tried to copy the Scavenger design, except with left hand spin, would definitly change that. If the prop is 8" in diameter and the yoke is 1" I would have to say a 13hp would be about right, but thats just my opinion. I have a 13hp with an 8x6 prop and i think thats whats recommended for a 13. |
