I am new to these boats and this will be my first and i just wanted to ask to see what are the pros and cons of the longtail motors to the surface drive motors. Thanks

There is no question about speed, surface drive will get you there a lot quicker than a long tail. You can turn a lot sharper and faster just like you can with an outboard which is bas ash in the thick cuts. As far as getting trew mud which is what I like to do. Go with a longtail. You have a lot more shaft to put down deep. Longtails are like the 4x4 of mud motors.

my buddy has a long tail and we went to one of the mmt rides and the surface drives beat us there but when we got there 3 or 4 boats were stuck already. we cruised up stopped and everybody was like you should not have done that... i got out to help the stuck and my buddy started his longtail, stuck it down and worked it a few times and there he went.

Long tails go over sand bars, if your in an area that has them.

I run a 16 GDLT and one of my friends runs a 14 MBHD on the exact same boat and we run almost exactly the same speed, but in the slop and the shallows I have literally driven circles around him while he's stuck.

That's right. Longtail is the way to go. Who cares if it slower and more work

I go 23 trough the mud with my longtail so I'm not far behind you. Not like some Longtails

:D I know. That's why they build different kinds so people can have what they want. I just need a new boat.

If you run in sand, or a firm bottom shallow area there is no question the long tail is the way to go. You can navigate sandbars and slow crawl over logs and sunken timber in firm bottom places when a surface drive will have to be pushed.

Where I travel, the extra speed of a surface drive is pointless, you cannot go that fast anyway on small shallow sandy bottom georgia bayou's, most place bank to bank is 20 feet or less and it winds like a snake. you would seldom ever hit your top speed even with a longtail for more than a few hundred yards.

In slow bumping and grinding, digging in and crawling through tight situations, looking at firm bottoms and sunken logs. The long tail is the better performer.

Just about anywhere else, the surface drive would be the better choice.
