 Super longtail?
Has anyone seen or ran one of these? Just curious is to what speeds they get and if it works well?

 Re: Super longtail?
they are not in production yet so you may only find a hand full of people who have ran one and the same about seein on up close and personal (not a pic) but that being said they are claiming within a few mph of a stck sd. should be like running any otheir longtail but maybe more brutal when you hit something at a high speed

 Re: Super longtail?

 Re: Super longtail?
i gotcha i still dont quite understande how a reduction gear is gunna make it any faaster all a red gear is takin one engine rpm and making it less than one prop rpm

 Re: Super longtail?
explain that principle to me im not tryin to argue im just tryin to understand. if the red gear is turning less rpms at the prop than what then engine is turning then that should mean less power on the prop side which to me would mean less prop all you would gain as not as much rpms to turn that prop ?

 Re: Super longtail?
It gives more tourqe and power at the prop because of the gear reduction, were not talkin like 2:1 or 3:1, its got to be the perfect balance of RPM's and prop
a 35 1:1 longtail turns a 10x6 whereas a 1.5:1 sd can turn a 12x12 at the same engine RPM.
The prop may turn slower than the longtail, but it is moving twice the water.

 Re: Super longtail?
Gear reduction doesn't allow you to go faster, it allows you to turn a larger prop, and therefore get on plane with a heavier payload. Nothing "super" or new about it. The commercial fishermen in Thailand have been running 3:1 gear reduction boxes on their LT's for as long as I can remember.

 Re: Super longtail?
I never could figure if he was a mfg or not. Looked like he orders the parts from Thai, and builds them here. Don't really know what that makes him, but either way...Give it a rest. Not practical for where we run anyway.

 Re: Super longtail?
I, for one, welcome the new longtail. I would like the gear reduction, but don't necessarily want the clutch for neutral if that means more breakdowns. With the skinny water and hard bottom areas we have, the longtail is still viable. My good friend has a MB35 shorty which runs well enough but has broken down the last two seasons and I had to tow him back. The other aspect here is the shorty will get stuck a lot faster and farther in and that is a liability even if equipped with a winch. That also means a severly worn prop in a short time. I will bottom out sooner with my longtail and that is not a bad thing as it will be easier for me to extricate myself out without a hernia. Obviously for speed, distance, turning radius, trailering, torque and push, the shorty has me beat. Some of the newer duck hunters in the area have only known shorties, and look with disdain at my older design, but many of them have sold theirs and bought airboats- those are effective but too much cost and maintenance for me. I like the simplicity, reliability, and lower overall maintenance costs of my longtail.

 Re: Super longtail?
The reason a lt does better is a smaller prop.
that gear reduction will put you back close to a SD.

 Re: Super longtail?
While there is a little more to it than just a prop... the fact a LT runs a 9" or 10" prop vs a 12" is alot to do with it.
A 2" or 3" extra clearance is a good bit when you are talking about less than a foot of water. Some people say the longer shaft has some to do with it but the LT and SD enter the water at about the same angle. The larger skeg on a sd has a little in the factor of why it doesn't do so well.
We aren't talking about a whole lot of depth difference either, over a rock hard sand bottom a SD may need 10-12" of water to get up where a LT may need 8-9" Momentum and torque has alot to do with where you can and can't go which is why the 35 LT probly did better.

 Re: Super longtail?
I am onboard w/ you, I have a modified honda 24 on a gd1838 turning a 9x7 and get around 3700 rpm 21mph w/ light load, 19 w/ 2 men average load. Can't really ask for more w/ a longtail, and I can go places at half throttle a sd could only dream of, and if I do get stuck my rig is light enough to be pushed out easily. You dont have to sell the longtail to me, it sells itself. I was just interested in this "super longtail", and if mb had found a way to improve an already proven design.

Or maybe they're just blowin smoke! It's hard to believe nobody has first hand experience w/ one of these yet.
