 water in shaft......SMOKE. help!
i bought a used go devil. put new bushings and seals in and it ran fine for 2 months greased everytime. I just bought a 23 hp engine and put it on and must have moved the shaft a bit. the old shaft was a tiny bit bent but as long as it was full of grease it did fine.
took it for a test run and after about 5 mins smoke was pouring out of the top seal, along with water and grease dripping and bubbling out. took it home and started pumping it fulll of grease to flush out the water and water was shooting out the rear seal!
do these things tend to suck up water if the rear seal is bad?
how much are new shafts?

last one i got was 75 bucks. youre gonna need new seals and bushings. read the online gd manuals and center the shaft correctly. i use .003" shim and tap the motor around til the bushing/shaft is true. if your housing is warped youre going to have to bore line it. "bend it until the shaft is centered on the bushing/bearing and slides in and out and spins freely when dry fit". mine is a 1986 so its been done a few times.

 Re: water in shaft......SMOKE. help!
75 bucks! way cheaper than i thought! did you buy it from go devil?? i think im gonna keep my old bushings since i don't think there is much wear on them. ill try new seals and a new shaft. i think my old shaft was worn anyway so a new shaft might fit in tight.
i cant seem to get the old seals out of the rear cap....is there a trick to it? or do i have to order a new cap with seals installed again?
and what is and how do you "bore line" the housing? i have suspicions it it slightly warped.
this down time is killing me with a brand new shiny engine wanting to tear up the river.

i bought from go devil. last one was 2yrs ago. when you bore site a housing you have bushing and bearings installed but no grease and you just have to look and see which side of the bushing is rubbing and bend twards it. i have a pipe bender but in the manual it will tell you how to do it with other stuff. btw in the right enviroments like sand and silt, the shaft will wear before the seals. pull the shaft and see if it has a worn groove in it. i have the old seals in mine 2001 model i think. its just two double sided seals you can pull out with a scribe. But like i said it tells all in the online manual. just my .02 if you have the older seals then stay with them, they are like 3.50 each the new ones are $25!

ya its an older style. i pulled the shaft and it has grooves in it, its also pitted all over the place. definatly need a new one.
did you have any problems ordering just the shaft from them? i read somehwere else that they give you a hard time about buying a shaft for some odd reason.

If you have a Go-Devil brand frame, just have the serial number ready when you call to place an order. No serial # = no parts.

 Re: water in shaft......SMOKE. help!
yea no problems what so ever. If you have your numbers they have a complete record of everything that was ordered for that frame and ship pretty fast. Warren can be anal about other brand stuff on your mm but if its his stuff, he will talk you through a problem. most things you need, bushings, seals, u joints, throttle cables ect. they are real good on prices. shipping is high if you buy just 1 or 2 items so go ahead and get several sets of seals and bushings. you probably gonna need em if you keep your motor anyways.

 Re: water in shaft......SMOKE. help!
well i put a brand new shaft and seals in. the shaft was tight around the bushings. I did notice that the shaft slid nicely through the bottom 2 bushings (we cut one off and drove it up the housing for extra shaft support on the old slightly bent shaft) but it had to be twisted to fit through the top bushing and was alitle hard to push through. filled it up with grease and instantly hot and started smoking. i figured if the housing was bent it would take awile to grind out and seat in the top bushing. after about 4 hrs of running it with the hose on it, eventually the temp stabalized at 230 and started slowly going down at the bushings at full throttel. phew! all this tells me i bought a godevil with a bent housing either from the factory or the previous owners. do you guys know what your go devils running temp is around the bushings??

If you ask most will say you should be able to hold your hand on it. did you try to straighten you housing any? when you pushed the drive shaft did you check for even clearance on bushings? If the top was off you should have loosened the motor and moved it til it centered the bushing, then bend the housing to adjust for the bottom if needed. also did you open up the bushings before installing?
