I have my old 13hp beavertail longtail sitting in the garage. I usually use my 27hp longtail on a 1448 with great success on ducks on rivers and swamps but recently had an absolute blast down at the coast in the marsh shooting rails in the early season. I did have real difficulty poling the flat bottom around in a stiff wind. Although I have fished extensively in Texas and Florida on the flats - all the other boats I have poled had at least a little keel to them that kept them tracking straight. I am considering buying a second small v-hulled jon to mount my old motor on just for using at the coast and wanted to see if anyone has done so and what sort of performance they got. The pros and cons as I see it: Pro: 1. Already have the other motor and it is the 13hp aluminum framed version so less corrosion issues. 2. Small 12-14 foot V-hulls with the rounded bottoms from up north are really cheap around here and I can get one with a galvanized trailer for just a couple of hundred bucks. 3. The painted steel trailer on my current boat would not get rusted out so fast even though I wash it after every trip. 4. I can leave the rig down at the beach at a buddy's place so save gas pulling the other boat back and forth. I this would pay for the base boat and trailer within a year or so. 5. the v-hull bow might prevent the bay chop from splashing saltwater all over my gear like it does with my squared off bow now. 6. The v-hull might pole straighter with a little wind and If i don't put a blind on it I could put a small poling plaform on it. Cons: I know I am not going to get great performance such as high top end speed but what 13hp longtail does? Most of the marsh I go to is only a mile or two from the ramp at most. The v-hulls are pretty skinny so this might help. Anyone out there ever tried to put a longtail on one of those rounded bottom v-hulls. I am not talking about a war eagle or the type with a flat bottom but v-d out front. I am considering the rounded bottom and curved bow type like the old sears models you see up north on lakes. Any opinions on the idea would be welcomed. |

let er eat, will probably work fine. I know of a guy in s fl who runs a 9hp longtail on a ole riveted semi vee gamefisher boat and works for him just fine. i have a 75-80hp beavertail predator longtail that i'm bout to run on a 17 ft vee bottom cuz it's all i got at the moment. I'll let you know how it goes and no matter what it still beats rowin.

only draw back is deeper draft/ not getting as shallow. no worries as far as performance otherwise, have seen many longtails pushing semi V hulls. |
