I am biased because of what I've owned: an 18 Briggs HP GD, two Kohler 25 HP Kohlers, presently a 27 HP MB Kohler longtail. My three waterfowling colleagues have also run Kohler 25's for a combined 65 years. I think you can't go wrong with the Kohler in these HP applications; the Briggs was also very dependable as many with big block 35's will vouch. The only two Hondas I "met" were troublesome 24 HP motors, fuel pump issues mostly, but did not deliver the push and torque like the Kohler 25. The once-applied Kawasaki 29 has had numerous issues reported, apparently costly and hard to find replacement parts. You will find Briggs and Kohler replacement parts almost anywhere. There seems to be a big difference in terms of HP: the smaller application motors I know nothing about- these fit an important niche because of many areas that have HP restrictions or truly small marshes where a larger motor's.hull weight is a liability. Remember, you expect long service from both Briggs/Kohler as these motors are designed for long term, continuous use service as generators many times besides riding mower, etc. I like the fact both are still (?) made in the U.S.A.!!

For a small hp application, Honda all the way.

Briggs/Kohler/Honda are all good but i tend to lean twards the first two as parts and customer service are better. If you call honda they will send you to a repair shop.

I cant find a small hp LT with a briggs on it , and the only one that I have really found with a Kohler was a MAYHEM. All the rest seem to be going to Robin , honda, lifan.

nothing wrong with a robin. they are made by subaru i think. i never had to do any repairs to one other than a dirty carb on a generator. the hondas are good imo you are paying for the name unless you get the japanese made ones. Lifan is a honda clone and is a good motor with cheaper priced parts. I really dont think you will go wrong with any. if you take care of them they will last, if you run'em like you stole them then yea they're gonna shit the bed sooner or later. if youre thinking robin you must be looking at a stump jumper. i like them. super light and surprisingly strong. My friend bought one and has no issues. they run alittle better because the use a chain coupler with an inline shaft so no loss of power though ujoint angle.
