Is it necessary to purchase the prop removal tool from GODEVIL to get the prop off? I need to replace my lower seals and I wanted to check with those that have performed this maintenance already. Thanks for your time. Scott |

From what I have read on here it requires a cinder block, 2 Big forking wrenches, 8 lb maul, and a torch. Or take it to Giga he can do it in 2 minutes blindfolded. Try the search button |

When my prop is stuck on the shaft tight, I just take the nut off behind the prop and start the motor, goose it a few times and then pull the kill-switch, and the prop usually spins down the shaft away from the top jam nuts. |

SwampDonkey1, I was smiling when I read your post, since I have done this a few times myself. Many years ago I realized that to make this easier, I took the prop off at least a couple of times a season, and always cleaned the threads and applied anti-seize grease/compound. Even when doing this the prop was never too easy to remove so I did what you just described. I do urge caution and make sure no one or nothing is behind the prop since if you are not quick it will spin off and wreak havoc!! I realize that many here run in brackish water and that will definitely make it bind more if you don't take off the prop now and then. In those situations, this method won't work and the torch/cheater bar/huff and puff process is indicated. Keep it clean! ![]() |

I did search for an answer but couldn't find any specifics on what tools were used to remove the prop itself. I do run mine in salt and brackish but always wash it down after each use and I will try SwampDonkeys method and will post results... I am hoping others will chime in on the need or no need for a prop wrench. Scott |

I broke down and bought the prop removal tool from GD and went to my buddies machine shop to use his torch and finally got the sucker off. Seals replaced, lots of anti seize and a plan to break it loose at the beginning of the season, middle of the season and the end of the season. What a nut buster to get off... |

For sure! Back in '89, I called Coco, "Mr. GD", asking about the prop and also the sleeve bearings and he stated he routinely changed out the bearings/seals at least twice each season! It is a proven design, although I would always take my grease gun with me because of the grease loss. I have not experienced any loss like that with my MB 2004 however. I just removed my prop because I wore it down during teal season here with the then low water; I had to use SwampMonkey's method turning the motor on/off and got her to come off. ![]() |
