I currently run a 24 BTLT on a 1648 Legand craft, Im debating on between a 23ish SD or a bigger 35 LT.

I'm running 13-14 loaded with 2 pep, any ideas what a 23sd and. 35lt would get me up to?

16 48 can handle a 35 hp SD if you are not a jackass
23 hp SD easier to drive than 35
I am actually a fan of the 35 longtail. Then again I am dumb and can handle the tiller torque

You should be running a couple of mph more with that 24 LT. A friend runs a 35 SD on a 1648 hull and gets 24-27 mph with a two hunter load. A 23 SD should get you 22-24 mph with a two hunter load. A 27 SD is also an option on your legendcraft. My 27 LT gets me 17.5 mph with two hunters and gear on my 1648 grizzly- the hull plows a bit but it gets the job done. There are so many factors because each hull has its own dynamics. As was stated, my left arm has benefitted from the workout the LT provides. :mrgreen: In a few short years I may go the SD route because I ain't no rookie. :mrgreen:

Ok thx guys. I would like a 35 SD but its just not practical for me right now. So will the 35 lt get me around the same speed as the 23sd?

its gonna depend on your boat. b coonass has a 31 lt that runs around 30

I have a 35hp mudbuddy longtail on 16/48 go-devil shallow drive boat and I get 23.7 mph with a light load. The load really does not make much difference, maybe 2 mph with a heavy load. It's got the torque. You have to learn to drive it and not let it drive you.

I had a 35 LT on a 16x48 and that thing was a beast. We had a 24 LT on the same hull and the difference in load carrying was noticeable but never gps'd it with either motor. If I had to guess I'd have to say mid 20's empty with the 35 but that's only a guess.

I got rid of it because it was killing my left elbow. I got a sd and don't miss that thing at all.

It all depends what your running in. If you have lots of hard bottom the 35 would be the way to go. I have a 23 sd on a 1648 and I get 22 with me and buddy, both of us are 180-190lbs, dog and gear. We have more clay/muck/sand than mud. Few spots we hunt I get there first and run right in but have to make sure I set down in a beaver/rat run with 10" of water or so. 4-5" of water and you won't get on pad. Buddy has a 24 mblt on a 1648 w/pods and he walks right out.

I had a 23hp LT on a 1448 MV Jon for 10 yrs. Moved to a bigger boat, 1754 Grizzly with a 35hp LT. Found it just as easy to drive as the 23hp, big diference in power though. I don't make long runs very often and hunt hard bottom marshes mainly. Love the 35hp LT and used the savings for other things on boat and spread.
Never had a SD so can't compare speeds for you.

No doubt a lt will kick your ass in the stumps, but they are hard to beat slow-rolling over logs and beaver dams.

Dog Walker you gotta be a man to drive a long tail. I guess that's why you are over here in the long tail forum cause you wish you were a man. Just kidding. Weight distribution is the key for an easy to steer long tail. Gas, battery, and Anchor on left side and driver on right. I hunt with guys that have the very first go devil long tails that came out years ago and they have had to do nothing to them. I can drive mine with no hands wide open and can sit down. I adjust my cavitation plate down to where it blows out, then set it just barely up till it stays in the water. If you have your weight distribution and cavitation adjustment right, it's just like power steering. If you feel pressure on the handle shift your weight to get rid of it. If you own a long tail you are forced to deal with less moving parts to tear up and $3K more in your pocket compared to a shallow drive.

LOL I ran longtails for about 20 years before I switched to a SD, I know all about them. I still have 2 small hp lt's in my father in laws trapping shed. They are great but for what I do and where I run a SD beats a LT hands down.
