 anybody have a backwater ???
I'm needing some good pics of one. I am trying to build a transom mount similar to the one they use.

Re: anybody have a backwater ???
Even if there is not much interest here, I am interested. Did you check out their website? That might help some. I am impressed with the cavitation plate design, as well with the variable transom mount. Would running a longtail on "hunt deck design", meaning the motor is set back some affording more room in the back be feasible?

Re: anybody have a backwater ???
I checked their website but like all other sites there are no detailed close ups. I just figured some folks on here who had one might be able to help me out. So far not much help. lol I'll make it without it if need be. I'm gonna be running this paticular motor on a standard john boat so if I could set it back a little it would be nice.

Re: anybody have a backwater ???
DirtNasty, sounds like a good idea. I've wondered how this may improve an LT, just like those surface drives on those hunt deck as I stated before. Would a hydraulic jack plate accomplish anything? I know this adds cost but just thinking, which does not cost anything. If you do accomplish your setup let us know how it runs please.

Re: anybody have a backwater ???
I had to re order my u joint. I originally ordered one to fit a 2.5hp motor I was gonna build for my layout boat. but since I got the 12.5 kohler for free why not build a bigger one. I get all the steel free from work, and bearings, bushings ect. So all I have in the mud motor so far is $38 for u joint and $39 for the DOM tubing which I needed to fit the specs of bearings. All I need now is a prop which will run 150 or so, and to machine my upper bearing housing to hold the roller bearing. I have already started fab work on the motor mount. but need the u joint to proceed. I will get some pics up sometime next week.
anyone know what kind of angle the drive shaft is at, as opposed to the crankshaft on motor. just by looking at photos im thinking 15 to 25 degrees??
as far as the transom mount. I dont have alot of experience with boats. I have only had 1 bass boat in my life and only had it for 1 summer. but Ive noticed on the backwater motors the set back mount allows them to use a shorter drive shaft than the other motors. which may allow for less vibration and radial force on bearings resulting in less friction ect. plus i think the width of it allows the motor mount assembly to sit more stable and not wobble at the pivot point. I have seen other motors get wallered out where the main bolt is at causing the motor to tilt when turning. Plus I like the way it looks and gives you that room. and if I have a pic of it i can build it, and thats alot cheaper than buying any kind of tilt/trim/jackplate

Re: anybody have a backwater ???
I actually just finished my homemade lt this last summer and used it all huntin season, 16hp pushes 14x40 15 mph with about 550lbs in the boat.i also got steel free or minimum priced from work.my 2cents, first time you take it out make sure you got it fully lubricated this can be deseving pump the shi#t outa that grease!! 14 degrees, i think if i build another im gunna go a little less so it comes out of the water higher,9x5 prop with real heavy load in back of the boat, motor just clears water.

Re: anybody have a backwater ???
I built one with the variable mount. Its really not that hard. When I get home from work I'll try to post up a pic or two. I actually built it and then went and looked at the backwater at a local dealer. Instead of a solid pin I just went with two bolts. Just from looking at their cav plate it looks pretty sweet but then I looked at it up close and it seems flimsy. Its made out of a composite material and I think that I would break it running through the stumps and rocks of the river.

Re: anybody have a backwater ???
Yeah, Ive read a lot of good things about their cav. plate I like the design of it. even though I really dont know much about longtails the things Looks sweet. Lol I figured I could build one pretty close to theres out of say 10 or 12 gauge steel. I will have to experiment with that because I dont know what a cavitation plate is supposed to do. Some folks say you dont need it others say you gatta have it??? I'm gonna just tack weld one on and play with the angle and pivot point and see what gives me the best speed and ease of use with the tiller handle.

Re: anybody have a backwater ???
That is real cool. I also like the idea of reducing squat, backwash, increase flotation, and have an easier in/out platform if I am hunting in waders or as a dog entry point. Backwater is also supposed to be introducing their own boats, I am awaiting that. On their for sale pics, there is an 1848 with pods that looks really interesting, wondering if that had a longtail or surface drive on it? My 1648 grizzly is serviceable but far from ideal with my 27 MB longtail. Thanks for the pic!

Re: anybody have a backwater ???
That is very similar to what I have mocked up now. I have just finished building the frame and it turned out really good considering I dont have a half of the fab equipment I need to build these to perfection.

Re: anybody have a backwater ???
Getting the plate broke for the transom mount tomorrow. Then all it needs is cav. plate then time for a test run.
