| Post subject: | Sealed bearing housing |
Im looking for a sealed bearing housing assembly cannot find one. I want to run a bearing at the u-joint end and prop end with a brass bushing in the center of the shaft. Having trouble finding one. Any help would be great, maybe a diagram or such. Thanks!!! |

Dont know what you are looking to spend.. but Backwater Inc. sells there complete assembly (w/bearings and seals)for 275. I spoke with arlon about 2 weeks ago and bought a prop and talked with him about the bearings. They will just slip on your shaft housing and weld on. and the housings screw onto the bushing that welds on. I dont think you can find a better setup than what they have in my opinion. I just finished building my lt and plan to buy them when I get 275 layin around. I have searched every which way to try to make my own and could not find a way to do it without having to have machine work done. So unless you know a machinist, then thats gonna cost a minimum of 100 bucks or so...plus you still have to buy the bearings and seals etc. I'd give em a call and check it out. |

Blackduck I'm starting my build and was looking at a similar set up except I want a housing just at the U-Joint to transfer the thrust forces to the frame, not the U-Joint. I put together a diagram of a housing that will require minimal machining and welding, and is not made from pipe fittings. I just ordered my parts from Onlinemetal.com for about $30.00. The bearings, locking shaft collar, and seals will be another $30.00 tops. I Attached the file here. If you need a better copy just IM me. |

Why use a sealed and welded on bearing.? I built mine with 3 bushings and seals so if/when one goes out its much easier to change and much cheaper. Its a little 6.5 on a layout boat.... I'm just curious because i'm getting ready to start on a 30hp for my 18' flatbottom. I bought my prop from blacwater. They have the great customer service. I tried the 7x4 prop thought it was a little small they let me return it since it was still in re-sellable condition and sent me the 7x5 with no hassle all i paid was shipping. |

I'm by no means a expert but the way it was explained to me was to control the thrust forces that the prop produces. On a normal set up using the bronze bearings the thrust forces travel up the shaft not the housing. The thrust forces are transferred up the shaft to the U-Joint and the motor. The bearings in the housing only controls rotational forces of the shaft. The shaft can walk up and bind. With the thrust bearing set up the bearing not only controls the rotational forces but also transfers the prop thrust to the housing and frame not the U-Joint. I hope this helps. |

Yeah, i thought that might happen so i tack welded the shafts to the u joint in a few spots. I could definitely see where the bearings would be a plus on larger hp set up's . |

I built this one for $10 but the machining was free so add that to your cost but its just a gas pipe fitting that screws down on the shaft housing and the bearing end is machined and the roller bearing is pressed in if the bearing goes out slide the shaft back unscrew it pop the old bearing out and press a new one in in a vise simple and cheap hope this helps |

I bought two sets of u-joints from drive shaft parts.com. You cannot beat that price. Its comes out to 36 bucks shipped. Thats both yokes and ujoint. |
