we just had our first round of cold weather for the season. cold enough to freeze anyway. got to the ramp and my throttel cable was froze. anyone else have this happen? any home remedies? ive got a small propane heater we use in the blind but i need something a little quicker. its kinda cut throat at the wma's around here and if you aint ready to go yer sol. thanks in advance

I always carry a big spray can of De-Icer in my boat box. Also put a dab of grease at each end of your throttle cable to keep moisture out.

When you expect a freeze, spray WD 40 into both ends of throttle cable and seal them with vaseline. Make sure to pull back the rubber cap on the cable at the engine side of cable when you seal it then move it back into place.

I had to pull a man and his dog out of the water yesterday morning at Malmaison WMA because of a frozen throttle cable. It froze on him and he climbed up the side of a cypress tree and it flipped the boat in about 10 foot of water. It was a 23 horse longtail so he had no neutral, and he pulled the kill switch but the engine kept running. I had killed my motor when I got to the hole and heard him hit the tree. God was in control of the situation and everyone is ok. It just scared the heck out of us all. A frozen throttle cable is never good.

mine froze up when I was in the blind and broke when I squeezed the throttle. I had to use a decoy string to get home. I pumped lithium grease in the cable until it came out the other end and never had that prob. again it would get stiff when it was below 30 but never froze up again.

I learned my lesson last year at the launch. It's no fun messing around trying to get that littles T-stop-bar back in that tiny slot in the throttle lever in freezing rain. I was not the only one with that problem that day.

On this very topic, how difficult do you think it would me to design a more reliable mechanical connection between throttle and engine. I would buy that in a second.

Mine has frozen a couple times. If it freezes wide open what i do is grab the sleeve that the throttle cable is in. Take my other hand and push the throttle lever closed. On mine when it is frozen an you try to throttle down the lever moves but all it is dong is pushing the sleeve and everything back so by holding the sleeve it allows the cable to break free. Hope this helps.

X2 on what Trev said, unless it is built up thick on there it don't take alot of force to break it free.

theres a "ice free" throtle cable made for the 6x6's prolly could make one work on a mm....argo maybe or 6x6world.com is where i seen it.

there is an engine mount throttle/ cable assembly that mounts on the engine for the briggs motors. I installed one as a back up and left it unconnected on the engine side.

eventually, the bending that your throttle cable goes through will result in failure. That back up saves the day, and is a cheap preventative measure.

as for icing, I slid a gas line 'sheath' over my throttle cable and cut a drain hole at the bottom of the bend. It is lubed regurlarly from both sides with non freezing gun oil. Haven't had any problems.
