Post 18hp honda homemade longtail
Ok guys I am new to the mud motor stuff. I have a 1442 with a 18 hp honda longtail. the shaft and and everything is all stainless. and the two props that I have are made from brass.. The one on the motor nos is 9 1/4 inches from widest points. I have never ran a longtail or any other mud motor and yesterday i went down to run this one and Obviously I have alot to learn. I was about half throttle and the boat was on plane doing 11 mph.. Is this normal? It seemed like if i went any higher in the throttle that it would just wanna rev up and not do anything or go any faster. (prop would wanna come up) This was in a couple feet of water as well. Got it in the mud and it (2 inches of water) and it shot right through it. Anyways.. I know these rigs arent fast but how fast should something like what i have go with the right prop? Thanks in Advance to all answers.

Have you got a cavitation plate?

If so, bend the end up until it starts to ride completely submerged.

That prop cover like the one in my user pic.

The prop needs to be completely submerged with that plate 1-2" under the water, you bend the tip up to counteract the lift from the prop so it stays under. You follow me?

Hey man I have A 14/48 flat with an 18 hp honda on a homade rig and mine tops out at about 22 mph with just me, a battery, and 6 gallon gas. I have a worn out 9x6 prop on mine. Yeah when you get to half throttle it does sound like all you will do is rev up the motor at full throttle but it does speed up a lot more at full throttle. Like woodiebuster said you just have to adjust that cav plate a little. Make sure you have an oh shit handle in there to hold on to becuase that lil motor has a lot of torque and will knock you out of the boat, give it the gas, and have fun.

stick time is your friend. :D

do not grasp the throttle handle with a death grip, you hit a log and you'll have a shoulder out of socket.
