Post 1644 Go-Devil Boat and 35hp Long Tail
Going to place an order for a new Go-Devil Boat, Motor and Trailer in a couple of days! I was wondering if anyone knew anybody running a 1644/35 long tail? I am not sure if Go-Devil will sell me that set up together they might not for Ins/Liability reasons. The biggest they recommend is a 27 long tail for that boat and 23hp being the optimal choice according to the staff? I don't think I need a 35 hp as much as I am not sure of the kohler engine. Never owned a kohler but have owned two vanguards which were great motors (16LT and 35SD). I am at that terrible point of second guessing and buyers remorse! I am sure the 23 would be enough, but the 27 is probably perfect i'm just nervous about the kohler engine? Let me know if this is rediculous and any personal experience with kohlers. Thanks for the help!!

Thanks guys, Why the 1844 over the 1644? I have had a couple of 16 ft alweld flats and they worked great for me, I want to have the capability to carry a pirogue sometimes thats why the 1644. Warren Coco has tried to get me to go with a 1838/23 and said everyone tells him he's nuts but thanks him later! a close friend of mine had the 1644/23 and said it was great for our area but always wished he had a little bit more motor when loaded. also said they made a few trips to venice where they ran down the Mississippi River and the boat did fine but did feel a little small considering where they were. I am not sure where I may go and this is a hopefully long term investment and I want to be able to "travel" with the boat. He and his father went on a guided hunt where they used an 1838/27 and said the boat hauled *ss!!! was a great blind bcause it is narrow and was easy to conceal, but it felt small and tippy? I am just lost and I am so afraid to spend a Sh*t Load of money and not have it right again! This would be the third time for me with Go-Devils. Explain: Had a 16LT on 1442 flat>>Good in the mud but the dog could swim faster with two men and decoys!! 35SD on 1652 Flat Alweld got stuck twice and was pissed off and scared to go anywhere after that>>SD's by the time you realize you F*cked up you are way to far in the sh*t to get out!! I want a boat I know will go anywhere and that I can hunt out of with my 7 year old daughter, carry a pirogue and hunt out of blinds, go frogging and crawfishing from time to time. I think the 18' will be harder to manuver in the woods >> no issues in the marsh with 1844. What are you guys running on the 1844's. What is your input on the 23hp Vanguard 1644? 1644 27hp or 23hp?

Forgot one more thing fellas! I don't want to beat you guys to death, but one other reason why I am not sold on the 1838 is the limited accessories you can get added, no poling platform, no split seats and looking in the photos on go devil his teen age son barely has room to move in the driver seat with all the foam panels. I am a big guy 245 6'3 in reg clothes that is I need the 44'" width and that is narrow in my opinion? Thanks again. Why the 1844 over 1644 blows my mind! Elaborate more for me please! you dont find it hard to spin that long *ss boat around in the narrow ditches and flooded timber? especially with an extra 6 feet of shaft hanging out the rear end!! Thanks again I know you all were in my shoes once and hind sight is 20/20 right?

1644 is actually 16.5 long. Look at the cad drawings on the gd site. The extra room is added to the front open space. If i remember correctly the 1644 and 1844 ate the same from the bench back. It'll carry a load better and give you a little more room. I wish i had the 18.
I've a had a 25 gdlt, 23 gdlt, 27 gdsd, and 31 mbsd on a 1644. I will never have another motor less than a 31 on it.

An 18' will run shallower, carry a load better, and plane quicker than a 16'. I have an 1854 w/ a 35gtr and I wish it was a 20ftr. I will never own a boat less than 18'. As far as navigating tight woods, we had a run last year for crawfish that we called the "zig zag" line. Trust me, if we could navigate 1854s and 2048 skiffs through that obstacle course, then you'll have no problem with an 1844!

the advantages of a longer boat far outweigh the disadvantages.

the extra 2 ft gives you longer planing surface which means it will not squat as much in the rear, especially with a guy your size driving it.

go with the 27 kohler. built rock solid, and you'll like the extra hp.

Another vote for the 18' hull....why not the 1848? I have a 1648 grizzly w/27 MB LT and I my next hull will be an 18'48 w/35. Best to get all the horses you can, and I also need the room and carrying capacity and it will be safer.

I have an 18x38 that I have had a 24lt,27lt,31hyper and now 36 Prodrive. If you are used to a narrow boat and run the majority of the time in the marsh then go with the 38 inch width as its a better marsh, shallow water, veggie runnin rig. But,the 44 is a good marsh boat but a little more stable in deep or open water.I have planed out and run well with 4 people,2 dogs and all hunting geat with the 24lt as the long narrow boat doesnt need alot of horsepower to get on step. Definitely get the 18 foot boat but if you have any doubt on width then get the wider one.
